The current installer already contains an out-commented support of additional downloads (see here or NSI-script).
Currently you find most of the textures on Mesial's website, each of them have their own installer.
What to do:
Convert textures into Text-based-bmp.mdl files (PNG) to reduce size/loading time (maybe useful: textmdltools)Create bundles
Asteroids/EnvironmentStationsShipsMisc (small stuff nobody notices like missiles)Upload files as 7z (installer supports that format)
After finishing this, we can build a new installer, which has that feature enabled. The only thing which needs clarification is a central storage for these files for download.
Installer - adding support for highres textures

There was also some slightly higher resolution content on the MS CD's from P. Arisman that covered a lot of ships, some bases, and a few miscellaneous objects. Quia went through and packaged most of them up as text png's. The link is somewhere on the artwork forums, I don't think it ever made it onto Mesial's site. There were a few problems with some of the images that might need some testing/tweaking as well.

Of course you can or you can use my textmdl script to create the files bmp.mdl-files.
