This is the one constant. I use a netbook with xp and a laptop with win 7. It happens mostly on the Netbook, and rarely on the laptop. So yes, cookie problems could also explain part of what is going on. This is not a priority issue, and it will take me a bit of time to observe and troubleshoot. First step will be to reinstall Opera from Scratch on both machines, then clear everything and take it from there.
Right now I am looking into svchost instability on the netbook. Comodo Internet Security sometimes warns me of a possible buffer overflow attack, and wants to isolate svchost. Restart solves the problem, which is very intermittent anyway.

AH CHOOOOOOO
I got suspicious, so I ran Security Essentials. Slenfbot. Most likely via Facebook. Machine is mine by sufferance only atm.
Guess that explains a lot.
As I visit relatively few sites, I am a little puzzled, but it is irrelevant. Now for the joy of redoing 3 Machines from the ground up.
