So I have been going over the docs, wiki and game videos the past couple evenings and even did a forum search on the topic, but haven't found the answer. Is there only one game mode? Has there been any talk of adding more modes? You know like typical CTF, player-regicide type modes, or CP capture points ftw? Just one mode, right? Just wasn't sure if I missed something at first since most games have multiple modes.

There is a CTF mode as well as various other win conditions. Turns out that they're not very fun to play. Conquest was how the game was meant to be played, and other than the occasional deathmatch between games, you usually won't find people playing anything else.

Yeah there is ctf and some scavenger hunt type "find artefact" games but they're rarely ever done.

Death Match is the only alternative game mode that gets any play.

edit: yeah whatever cashto!

Really?!? A CTF that isn't fun? Always my favorite mode in any game that has it hah. But I see how the conquest mode here could beat that out, looks intense. Of course CTF or most modes aren't as well suited for demanding squad play as conquest, or the necessity for it. For me, many of those games stand or fall depending on the use of squads (or groups/teams), and sadly even though they provide squad tools they are often still played in a solo manor by many (makes me pull my hair out). Ok cool, seemed odd there was only one mode, but the rest just aren't really covered since conquest is more native to the game. Thanks.

Moreover, Conquest is the only game type that the core developers try to balance the different factions for.

Quick rundown:

Conquest - Destroy all major enemy bases

Territory - 1st Team to control certain % of sectors wins.

CTF - Capture a certain number of flags. Pick them up from platforms where they spawn and dock them in your base.

Deathmatch - 1st team to certain # of kills.

Artifact - Collect a certain number of randomly spawned artifacts. Basically like CTF, except the "flags" spawn in random locations. Fun fact: Allegiance's original Producer, Rob Girling, has since moved on to co-found a design consultancy firm called Artefact Group.

Prosperity - This mode places an item in the garrison's tech tree called "Reinforcements" and it costs a ton of money. First team to complete that research wins the game.

Time - Impose a time limit in conjunction with any (or all) of the above win conditions.

Note you don't have to just play Conquest, or CTF, or DM, etc.. You can combine them all in the same game. Adding Territory or prosperity conditions to a conquest game gives teams a way to wrap up stalemate or turtle games.

But you just don't see it that often. I think part of the reason some of those modes seem less fun and don't get played is because they require little actual effort from the team(s). Prosperity is basically just a WIN button. You spend an hour playing, and to finish the game the commander just clicks a button and waits 90s for it to end. Yay. Likewise artifact and Territory don't necessarily require any conflict between the two teams for the game to end.

That's a comprehensive post, thanks. Quite a lot of modes actually. I think the two that interest me after conquest are CTF and Territory. Maybe rather than pick up a spawning flag, one must drop and hold a flag to take and keep a territory (carried from a base). Would need a lot of players of course, as more territory is held, the team is more spread out defending if they wish to hold those territories. Maybe holding flags at territories adds to a points pool for the win.

Yes, "prosperity" I've seen done in some games, Civ was one I think, and my least favorite mode.

Given that all commanders are known by their gentlemandly fairness, nothing stops both of them picking the same faction for CTF.

Part of what makes CTF or Territorial games fun is the environment. The environment in Allegiance is comparatively boring: it's space! A lot of the thrill of dashing down an unpopulated hallway or into a ravine really don't translate to space. Is there another space game that has a [fun] CTF like TF2 or Tribes 2 does?
