it's interesting that the large majority of people who are in favour of unlimited hiders are those of higher rank and hence have a much harder time of hiding.

I'm not to fussed, I do like coming up with a witty hider and then have people try and guess who I am, then I got mistaken for Wurf and never did it again! But for every witty hider there are a dozen annoying ones, perhaps an alternative would be no hiders but keep the bi-annual reset.

I'm not too bothered though and voted for the status quo.

I once played in a community with a strick one-nick limit. The enforcement guys spent about two thirds of their time trying to track down and ban people who made dual accounts.

Easy, yes.

Timeconsuming? Very.

I don't think the negatives of three 'alternate nicks' (the term hider is useless, as we have seen) outweight the positives.

FAO links computers to accounts, the other you describe community didn't. You can already run multiple account from different computers. Nothing will change, you won't spend more time on it.

Can't you just force defections on instead of wasting some time coding something which would basically be defections on by default. Also allowing comms to actually ban people from the game is pretty open to abuse and it doesn't exactly help with the low player count either. Really I can't see a reason why defections isn't on more it's easy enough to re-log with a hider and join the other team anyway. Only reason people don't do it more is they'd get a bad rep.

Which is another thing about hiders you say people can figure out hiders easily if that's true your reasoning for not having hiders is pretty pointless. I mean with my rank it's pretty hard to hide, even with 4 callsigns the best I can do is pretend to be Spidey.

sambasti wrote:QUOTE (sambasti @ Aug 29 2010, 05:17 PM) I think the booting thing is messed up anyway. Why?

Because the one person who launched to defend the miner but failed gets booted for "stupidity" while the person 3 sectors away looking for space bugs gets to keep playing.

That said, it seems to make everybody feel better about themselves to boot someone, so just carry on the way it is now, they can rejoin on a random hider anyway.
I'm amazed it took until page 3 for someone to point out the stupidity of the "1 nick would make people behave" theory. The majority of my bootings have not been for stupidity on my behalf but a hot-headed commander going nuts on the "boot pilot" button, or taking exception to something I've said.

Kinda funny really, since KGJV is arguing against one person having all the power in the community.... yet one person having all the power to decide if a person gets to play allegiance or not is OK? There is very little I would change about booting rules at the moment. If a mad commander wants to kick someone off his team for no decent reason, then fine go ahead, so long as that doesn't stop that player from playing altogether.

He's not talking about that (the current boot behavior is stupid anyway), he's talking about the fact that people might be more careful about making their reputations when they can't just change their name at will - vets and prominent players are mostly stuck with what they've got, but if someone like fertz made a hider and stuck to it, people would probably never even realize they were playing with a hider

Reading again - fair point. KGJV did not make the point I said he did, but others did so it wasn't a complete waste of typing.

It's now 2 and a half hours since I took tablets I was supposed to take 45 minutes before going to bed. It's a wonder I'm making any sense at all.

actually, someone brought that up on the first page. nt though

I keep hearing people objecting to unlimited hiders because of "potential for abuse." What exactly do you mean? Was that ever an issue when we DID have unlimited hiders? The enforcer tool applies bans to all linked hiders, are you saying that the fairhanded @allegs will allow abuses or rule breaking by some and not others? Isnt that one of the reasons some people get hiders, to get a clean slate? And what about certain people getting away with breaking the rules because they are so and so? Personally I like getting one and being able to do whatever without being hounded by every voob on the server. Even people like BV and TE like to talk about "this (insert event) was a good game for me to actually play on my main."

Furthermore, was there ever a vote by the community or even a discussion about changing from unlimited to 3 per 6 months? I may be mistaken, but i seem to recall te coming out and saying "hey, you only get 3 hiders" and poof! I'm sure there was some discussion behind the closed doors kage keeps talking about between a handful of people who never play the game but seem to think they Know What's Best for all us actives.

I am willing to compromise however. If we were able to get somewhere between 10 and 20 per 6 months i would be happy. It just seems that the people making the arguments for limited hiders are voobs who went up against someone they thought was as bad as them and ended up podding home because they didnt treat their opponent with respect. Or they didnt like being podded by Anal_Warts

Hiders are important for people like me who repeatedly manage to make a bad reputation for themselves.

Fun fact. I quit using my callsign "Weylin" because it gets booted 4000% more often than my non-weylin callsign that gets booted 1% of the time.

I'm actually wondering if I can make a new forum account without getting in trouble... To just start fresh as a newb that's a quick learner, regularly insults known idiots, and is a biologist that jokes about frozen semen, since that seems to be the requirements to get accepted into XT.
