Lets just replace it with a smiley face and rename it to Smiley Face. And let people figure it out for themselves.

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.
The wrench is slightly more clear, but the lightning bolt is fine. The icon really, really doesn't matter at all. The problem is the name. When I joined, I expected a power up to up my KB, or temporarily increase my shields beyond max, or something of that nature. That's what you expect from the name 'power up.' The lightning bolt meant nothing at all to me.

A lightning bolt may not mean anything, but a wrench will. Intuitively, in a computer game environment, a wrench symbol makes you think "repairs." Thus, even the name "power up" might not be enough to confuse newbies if they see it associated with a wrench symbol. At the very least, it will make it more likely that they'll figure out its real function the first time they pick one up (huh, I picked up that wrench thingy while undamaged/fully supplied and it didn't do anything. Guess all it does is repair!) without doing it over and over again (huh, that lightning bolt didn't seem to do anything. Well, it's some sort of power boost, so it probably has some effect I just haven't noticed yet!) I'm all in favour of changing the name too, but I disagree with the claim that the icon doesn't matter at all.

I would definitely prefer the wrench. When I joined, during my first game, I saw the lightning bolt power-up, thought it would do something awesome to me, and grabbed it. Luckily, I had boosted there, but it was a bit of time wasted when I could have done something good for my team. Plus, clarity makes players more likely to continue playing.
Change the ligthning icon for this icon -->" ", so they don't actually see them, and problem solved. The tool icon could be confused for a mechanical upgrade for their ship!!!
