WASD and Q and E for side-thrusting and rotating, and, uh... a whole bunch of nearby buttons for targeting different things (your miners, enemy miners, your bombers, enemy bombers, cons, bases, etc.) Also some convenient buttons for forward and reverse thrusting. I had "R" as reverse-thrust (and something else for ripcord) for a while, but later changed it because I kept hitting it by accident when side-thrusting... >_> I mapped "/" to toggle the mouse-as-joystick thingy. I don't even remember what I've changed any-more since it's been so long since I've used the default, so it's hard to give exact advice.

Edit: The Academy Set-up on the wiki article only uses a few keys on the number-pad, and these can easily be moved elsewhere. For example, "/" instead of "num0" for the mouse, "ctrl-R" instead of "*" for reload, and... well, the target keys are the hardest part I guess. I do it by using variations of the same letter for things I usually won't need to target in a hurry: "B" for base, "ctrl-B" for enemy base, and "alt-B" for "enemy tech base", for example. Also I use "V" for enemy ships that are commonly "objectives." "V" for enemy bomber, "ctrl-V" for enemy constructor, and "alt-V" for enemy miner. Of course I could just be crazy. It works for me though, especially since those buttons are all close together... >_>

Also, I find "target centre" useful, so I have the right mouse button set to that, and space-bar fires missiles. (Though the main reason for that is that an ancient space-sim called Star Rangers that I spent a lot of time playing as a kid had space-bar for missiles, and I got used to it. ) This also frees up "C", which is a convenient key for something you use often.

I have WAXD for sidethrusting. S in the middle for boosting, Q: Thrust forward E thrust backwards CZ for rolling, RFV for Ripcord Reload counter, TGB for Target nearest enemy, GAutopilot, Brobe/Brox. Right to them i mapped the YU -row for targeting friendly stuff , the HKL- row for targeting enemy stuff, and the NM-line for the what ever is left. 1..0 is default.

First: madpeeps alleg launcher. You need it so you can map thruster to your scrollwheel button and your throttle to your scrollwheel itself.

Second:

wasd, eq, zx for rolling, c for targetting, r for ripcord, and then I make prodigious use of the shift keys. shift-s is cycle cargo, ctrl-s is dump cargo, ctrl-r is reload, you can easily play this game on half of a keyboard as long as you're creative in your use of shift and ctrl since there are plenty of functions that are nice to have, but that you don't necessarily need in a dogfight (which means you can use the shift/control keys)

Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

i have brought 2 laptops with numpads so i wouldnt have to worry about allegiance.

after a while tho, i ended up making duplicate keys so nowadays i hardly ever have to cross my hand to the numpad side.

W/S/A/D - up/down & left/right
R/F - forward/back
Q/E - roll left/right
Shift + R/F - full throttle/ zero throttle
Space - boost
Tab - drop mines
Middle mouse - drop chaff
Z - ripcord
X - reload
C - cloak
Shift + Q/W/E - target nearest enemy/center/nearest ally
Ctrl + W/S - cycle cargo/drop cargo

maneuvering is okay although you may have to stretch your fingers sometimes to get used to it
cargo management done through ctrl + 1/2/3/4/5/W/S
targeting is usually okay with the 3 main ones although you may have to supplement this with some command view targeting

Thx again to all for your help. Going to work my way through the suggestions given. I got madpeeps config and will try that first.

Buy a N52 left hand controller as I did. And no, you should not need the numpad to remap keys, enter to the training course and choose "combat" practice, there you can customize your keys, it has a "feature" also that you need to press remap keys and accept everytime you start the simulation, but it is ONLY in the simulation, the remapped keys will operate in the server game then.

Of course you can remap them from a real game, but you could get the boot for flying in circles.
