Some people are going to give MrC an aneurysm with all this posting of pings :P

You need to save your tracert to a file where you basically add >> filename.txt after your tracert (e.g tracert solap.fe23.co.uk >> traces.txt)

then email them to SolapTraces@yahoo.com

however I do blame MrC by not putting this on the first post and hoping people will read through the whole thread before posting :P

EDIT:

If you don't want to run notjarvis's script what you need to do is type

date/t >> traces.txt
time/t >> traces.txt
solap.fe23.co.uk >> traces.txt

Saying this is akin to saying "America is a known bad country." Level3 have a massive network, and there are numerous routes to Solap which might traverse part of their network. FWIW I can trace to Solap, via Level3, from a box in the UK and see no problems whatsoever. Please keep the posts to the facts. :)

Ok double post time

First Id like to say Ive taken a much more aggressive stance with regard to the pants on the head retarded whiners. They are few, but they are mighty in their bitching. If you, as someone who uses Solap, does something constructive about any issues that you are having on it then I feel you got the right to belly ache at least until you get an update. Strangely those who are the most helpful bitch the least hmmmmm. This does not mean if your experiencing issues not to run traceroutes and send them to the solaptraces@yahoo.com We endeavour to make everyone lukewarm happy ;)

Second my intention is to have a section in the help forum for Solap. Origionally I thought we would put this issue to bed and I could slink off letting FreeBeer and Sgt_Baker handle things so I didn't $#@!ing flip out. Ooops and ooops again. It's more work then I ever thought it would be in a million years, so it looks like I had best set this up on a more useful permanet basis in the help forum. My intention was to do this before posting the next bit but well Im a lazy old cuss so you get the rest first so to speak.

If anyone got to see the fireworks today rest assured I do not feel bad about it and meant every word of it. If you refuse to be part of finding a solution but just sit in your dirty diaper then $#@! off and go play on one of the other two completely worthy servers. Especially if you feel the need to personally attack me while throwing your toys out of the crib.

So by all means help me help you help them help Allegiance. It does require some effort and understanding on your side too. We all do care about making the service the best it can be for the greatest number of people.

MrChaos

PS Admins can you please lock this thread as we discussed earlier, Im working on the updates for the help forum... Ill will get started on them... very soon.

Hello again David,

Looking Glass Networks/Level 3 Communications has identified a fault on our link between NYIIX in New York City, NY and our DCA2 datacenter in McLean, VA.

As such they will be performing emergency maintenance on this circuit tonight.

The maintenance window is from 12:00 midnight (~45 minutes from now) until 6:00am EDT.

The details of this maintenance as reported to us are as follows:

-- begin maintenance notification email --

Level 3 Communications - Network Change Control (NCC)
***Emergency Maintenance Advisement***

End Date & Time: Friday, October 09, 2009 06:00 ET (10/9/2009 10:00 GMT)

Reason for Maintenance: Level 3 will be replacing a card module to clear an impairment. Customers on this card will be impacted by an outage up to 1 hour.

Location(s): New York NY,

Comments: Clarify Case#: 3698246

Circuits Impacted:

Special Notes Concerning Service Impact:
Level 3 Communications will make every effort to minimize the impact, however, unforeseen circumstances could cause a larger impact.

Thank You,

The Maintenance Advisory Team

-- end maintenance notification email --

It is my hope that this maintenance will resolve at least some of the trouble you've experienced recently.

You will not experience any outages related to this event. Some network traffic, however, may temporarily experience increased latency as our network re-routes traffic around the affected New York City POP.

I will follow up on this ticket again after the maintenance has been completed.

As always if you have any further questions or requests please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!

Hello Cary,

I hope life is treating you well. First I was remiss in not getting back with you sooner for two reasons: first rl has been hectic and second I wanted to monitor things for a bit before responding to the ticket further. Let me begin by saying thank for going to such efforts to resolve it.

It appears the complaints for the most part on latency have subsided, this maybe due to there was some positive effect which is my hope, or they are being obstificated by some pretty brutual packet loss issues which appear to be increasing in occurence, duration, and time span.

Ive idled quietly in the game lobby trying to catch someone experiencing them while it occurs off and on for a number of weeks. The game has a feature under the esc key that allows you to see your ping and packet losses, both a help and bane to my existence atm. So as I would note the issue occuring with a particular player, I would then pm the person while still in game to please take a moment run the traceroute and then email it to the Solaptraces@yahoo.com account.

The level of response was underwhelming to say the least with many so absorbed in game play they wouldn't take the time to do it. It was a bit like catching a fart, in a bottle, during a windstorm. However I think we have a number of winners including happily, myself which was occuring within the last hour.

The troubling thing is these packet loses are more sustained, at least it seems to me, as the weeks have gone on.

Observations:

1. The packet loss issue occured about the time they "moved" the server several help tickets ago. Only after that did we begin to notice the issue.

2. The packet drop seems to jump from player to player, but not all of them and not the same person every time it occurs. I can hear you quietly weeping all the way over here Cary.

3. It seems to effect mostly those in the US but I could be full of hot air since the country of origin of the players is something you pick up via chatting with them and the forums rather info in game.

4. Not everyone is experiences it but those that do are getting packet losses as low as 7% and high as 100% all long enough for me to manually and randomly hit the esc key and p key to observe everyone's ping and packet losses.

5. They seem to be time based as in the occurence is worst during primetime US hours and seems non-existent other times. Again I may be wrong since I do sleep and work. The last point is what has been passed along by others.

Here are my trace routes from today taken with the last few hours:

10/25/09 12:25-12:30 CST HAPPENING TO MY ACCOUNT

*snipped them out do to the length of the posts, they were showing problems at the last two hops to Solap*

There should be some more interesting traceroutes in the email addy too.

On another note Ive decided to make things more official in the forum given the longevity of these issues and the lessons learned while doing it. So if there is a set format you would like to receive the data please by all means speak up. Location, and time including zone pops to my mind with of course the ever mentioned trace routes. My own corner of the help desk forum where we can filter and send the traceroutes that make sense to do so. And I thought being an owner was going to be easy, silly me.

I seems to me that there was an addenum to the last reports. If so by all means please put it here, I will continue to post them in the forums to show progress is being made on the issue.
