Hey thanks a lot, glad you like them. Were there any performance issues and what settings are you running them at? Could you tell the difference between 2048 and 1024?
Also, for those whose video cards are choking on the original 2048^2's, Here's a 1024^2 pack. At 1/4 the size they should work better for people with less than top systems and the detail difference shouldn't be too noticeable at lower resolutions.

High resoultion textures needed.

I can tell a difference when I switch to 1024, 512 or 256. The higher the better. /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":iluv:" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />

I used the new textures and they are amazing! Giga bases look so much better, the asteroids rock. Thanks a lot for your work...
The only drawback, one needs a high resolution to get the best result with the nice textures, but everything is so tiny in 1280*1024...

Adavan has the link's in his sig, I have a link to the 2048 back in the beta sticky, I will add the 1024 pack later today.Paradigm2 wrote:QUOTE (Paradigm2 @ Oct 19 2006, 11:00 AM) When can we get new high res backgrounds for mass distribution ?
My thinking (but this may change based on other's input) is this pack will remain an OPTIONAL download and thus likely will not be pushed over AU. But it will be liberally advertised (and likely linked in the MOTD) so those that want it can easily get it once R3 goes live. The larger pack is 30ish MB, and the smaller is 8+ MB, that would kill those on dial up.

Are you talking about the environment nebulas and stuff? I've got 2 pretty much done and another 2 that are close. I didn't really see much point in offering a download until there was a replacement ready for all 10 environments used in the game so that people didn't have to redownload things constantly. I've got the source material for at least a 3-4 more sitting on my harddrive, I just haven't had time to work with it. If anyone else has High-Res environments, let me know and we'll see if we can't piece together a pack for people.Paradigm2 wrote:QUOTE (Paradigm2 @ Oct 19 2006, 10:00 AM) When can we get new high res backgrounds for mass distribution ?
Nebulas really aren't that hard if you want to make some yourself. YP posted a tutorial a few pages back if you want to do things "right" and make the nebula in game be exactly proportioned like it would in real life. However, there is a much simpler way if you don't mind Alleg smushing and stretching parts of your image. You can just throw your source nebula in there and paint over the stars which would appear noticeably stretched if you left them in game since you are mapping this picture to a sphere. Dust clouds however, don't look any worse if pinched or stretched by the game engine. Just remember not to let anything touch the edge of the frame or you'll get some seams appearing in game.
This doesn't work as well galaxies or anything else with an easily "recognizeable" structure, for those you'd want to follow YP's tutorial and compensate for in game distortions from how the texture is mapped to a sphere.
You can look up actual imagery from Hubble and Spitzer. A lot of professional astro imaging like that can be used w/ out breaking copyright laws, NASA is really good about letting you use anything but thier logo, just check things out to make sure the owners of the image don't mind you using it.
The other background images are the nebplanets. These appear to just be flat images the game sometimes adds to the scenery. Currently I think they are all just pictures of planets, but this would be a good spot to add a nice picture of a galaxy w/o having to worry about distortions. I know someone was working on these a little and Orion posted a great tutorial link a few pages back as well.

There's a broad range of file sizes, from 512^2 to 1280^2. Average is probably around 1024 or 768.
