well if you close the distance with your enemy and fill your screen with his ship and then fire the dumb it might hit

Yes. Dumbs are great for softening up a target a split second before you ram them to death.

Dumbfires can work well in a furball, but they are best at picking off enemies who are fighting somebody else. Jyppa is on to a good thing, but on a more general level, look for moments when the enemy int/fig has turned and will be sitting almost dead in space for a moment. Anticipating such a moment by a second will let you land a dumbfire nice and easy.

The other use is to think of them as heatseekers in jet fighting sims. When the enemy is running away from you, dumbfires track quite well. Boost after him and launch them into his tailpipe (watch out for minepacks and prox). Dumbfires from the rear work quite well in picking off a bombers nanites, especially as DF have great resistance to countermeasures.

a lot of people fly up to a con or miner and start shooting it without moving their ship very much. they make great dumb targets

Dumbfires are also useful for making voobs piss their pants. If you're tacpremacy, use your DF to make everyone pound their CM button. CMs don't work on DF very well (I mean, duh :P ) and then they've wasted CMs on your DF2... so the SF with hunt2 can kill them.

Seriously though, either lob 'em at the heavy int rushing your miner, lob them at the int sitting in a prox field at an aleph camp, lob them at the int that just left the base, or lob them at the int that's floating around like a tard. Fighters attack targets of opportunity... an Int in a dogfight is not a "target of opportunity." Quit the opposite; you're HIS target of opportunity.

Not if the int is dogfighting somebody else. Or you're combat nanning your own allied Int and the 'tard enemy int hasn't noticed you yet.

Dumbfires are good for making voobs poop out countermeasures from 3k away.
