The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.
Aren't we in a situation where the newer nVidia cards don't work with Allegiance without some adjusting (going with the experimental graphics). That may well have a lot to do with it.Narg wrote:QUOTE (Narg @ Oct 18 2008, 01:02 PM) There were only 5 players on just now, i haven't seen the game so empty in years.
I do know of players who have joined, fallen in love with the game and then left after being repeated insulted by some of our vets. Not casual players either, but people who played 3 - 4 evenings in a week.Monkage wrote:QUOTE (Monkage @ Oct 22 2008, 06:35 PM) ...or maybe it wasn't the asshats that were running the newbies off?

IMO, there are 2 types of gamers, one that plays for fun, the other for reputation. It would seem that Alleg is losing its appeal for both types.
How long has it been since a "new tactic" was discovered in chess. It depends on what you mean by "new tactic"? A year ago, the common wisdom was that fig/bombers are useless. Fast forward past several games won (or hotly contested) by fig/bombers, and the opinion is changing. Rewind way before that and talk about Belter Tac. For the first year I was here (05-06), I hardly ever saw Belter Tac. In fact, while probing some imbalances on EoR, I recall TheBored exclaiming in frustration, "why wouldn't someone go belter tac [on EoR]?" A couple of months later, people figured out that Belter Tac had definite strengths, and we saw lots of Belter Tac for a long time. What else is out there?Monkage wrote:QUOTE (Monkage @ Oct 22 2008, 11:35 AM) Seriously, though, how long has it been since a new tactic was discovered in alleg?
No. Not a new low.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Oct 22 2008, 12:00 PM) 661 one actives on the leaderboard as I write this. Probably a new low. Bloody hell.
You posted at 6:00am EST on a Saturday morning. I'd be suprised to see anyone on.Narg wrote:QUOTE (Narg @ Oct 18 2008, 06:02 AM) There were only 5 players on just now, i haven't seen the game so empty in years.
We might also be seeing the effect of less duplicate accounts on the leaderboard. Its something the @Alleg team has been focusing on over the past few months. Some people had two or three 'primary' accounts that we've weeded out.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Oct 22 2008, 12:00 PM) 661 one actives on the leaderboard as I write this. Probably a new low. I meant it in the context of the opening post. Was a steady 1000+ when I joined up, about a year ago.Clay_Pigeon wrote:QUOTE (Clay_Pigeon @ Oct 22 2008, 07:56 PM) No. Not a new low.
