What I eventually did (laptop pilot here too) was to clear ALL of the key mappings and start from scratch. Put in the most important things first, fill in the others as you discover you need them.

Some of mine:
WASD for up-down-left-right sidethrust
Z and X for forward and backwards thrust
Q and E to roll
Shift-Z and Shift-X for 100% and 0 throttle
Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-X for increase/decrease throttle (rarely used, except when on a turret)
Space for switching mouse control on-off
Tab for boost
etc.

I recommend making good use of "overloading" keys with Shift and Ctrl, especially for similar functions.

I still use the Default config with a few targeting tweaks.

/me shrugs. Works well enough although i've been meaning to change it for a while now...
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Default, with a few extra targeting keys.
Works well for me. Along with the extra buttons on the mouse.

Can't find anywhere handy to map cargo management keys though. Thats the one thing that I currently have to reach for.

Yeah, 55 keys. That is pretty awesome. If my pad ever lets me down I will certainly look this one up.

!!! Don't use WASD. Use ESDF instead. This gives you 3 extra keys (QAZ) accessible with your pinky !!!

My keymap for reference: http://mysko.net/~erik/inputmap1.mdl

ESDF for thrusters
A - backwards
WR - increase decrease speed
+ some targeting stuff
Only bad thing is i had to bind roll to shift-SF. I should change it but I'm used to it now.

I was contemplating that the other day. It's a more natural position (fingers on home row, and most keyboards have a raised bump on the f key so you don't have to fumble blindly to get your hand in position). And I recognized the clear benefit of having access to more keys (again, my setup has a common problem where I miss the W for sidethrusting upwards, and I end up losing targetting ... if I could, I'd unmap E completely, but then where to put 'target next enemy' so it's close?! My setup is really cramped).

OTOH I don't want to throw out what muscle memory and key mneumonics I've already conditioned myself to use. :(

I prefer awsd because I use shift-w and shift-s for forward and back respectively, as well as shift-e for nearest enemy and e for next enemy and I also use the z and x keys for rolling (I can't remember if I use shift with them or not, oddly enough.) I have so many functions mapped to that side of my keyboard... I should really learn to use my whole keyboard when flying.

Also, my mouse has four buttons that Allegiance will let me map (and another one that allegiance WON'T let me map) which is really cool.

So left click is fire weapons, right is fire missiles, scroll wheel pressed down is boost, rolling the scroll wheel changes my thrust, and this little nifty button to the left of the mouse is set to mute game as well as push-to-talk for teamspeak.

It took me forever to figure out that TS and Alleg had different button names for my mouse though... Alleg thinks that 'boost' is mouse button three, and TS thinks that push to talk is mouse button three... but they're most definitely different buttons.
