last weekend, on an initial probe run at the start of the game, i spotted a cons near a rock about to build. i rushed there, got there in time to give it a bump and proceeded to tickle it with ammo. as it lined up, i bumped it again and continued shooting at it, despite doing serious damage to my hull as a result of the collision. another rack of ammo later and 3 or 4 more bumps, i was down to just the tiniest sliver of hull left and unfortunately the cons still had a sizable amount of health still.
at this point, i started to panic because nobody else had come to help finish the cons off and enemies were closing in. in the confusion, i pressed all the buttons and managed to drop a probe and watched it interfere with the cons building! i didn't get to see if the cons broke the probe on its own or if the enemies came and blew it up because i emptied out the rest of my ammo and kamakazied myself on the cons rather than to be taken prisoner.
so my question is.. if probes can block cons, can we do this or is it a bug? normally i can ram enemy probes to kill them but it seems a constructor cant do the same.
probes to block cons?
Probes can stop a con from lining up. Con AI is unable to handle probes inside the turning radius, it doesnt want to collide with the probe.fwiffo wrote:QUOTE (fwiffo @ Jun 9 2008, 11:21 PM) so my question is.. if probes can block cons, can we do this or is it a bug? normally i can ram enemy probes to kill them but it seems a constructor cant do the same.
(See also two miners, which try to dock at the same door at the same time. But here it works, because miners can move unlike probes.) /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Oh God...I have an impending sense that a lot of people are going to start probing up tech rocks...

Defenders will just kill your probe... no brainer when the probe is that close /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />fwiffo wrote:QUOTE (fwiffo @ Jun 9 2008, 03:10 PM) thats awesome, thanks. next time ill use probes to stop the cons instead of sacrificing my hull -- dont want to lose tech i picked up along the way.

Unless the defender happens to be an int w/ a 400m scan range and the con isn't close yet. Hard to see a probe if you're more than 200m away from it.TheBored wrote:QUOTE (TheBored @ Jun 9 2008, 06:11 PM) Defenders will just kill your probe... no brainer when the probe is that close /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

But other than that, it is a no-brainer.

yea thats true, but if i had a bunch of good tech and still wanted to delay the construction enough for help to arrive (and not get killed) then it seems to make sense to drop a probe and get some distance from the incoming defenders. i just thought that if the cons can't ram a probe and break it, that it might be considered an abuse of the game mechanics (and frowned upon).TheBored wrote:QUOTE (TheBored @ Jun 9 2008, 04:11 PM) Defenders will just kill your probe... no brainer when the probe is that close /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

If the con is being delayed by the probe, 200 meters is guaranteed /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />neotoxin wrote:QUOTE (neotoxin @ Jun 9 2008, 04:25 PM) Unless the defender happens to be an int w/ a 400m scan range and the con isn't close yet. You forget the fact that cons have massive scan ranges and will see the probe.neotoxin wrote:QUOTE (neotoxin @ Jun 10 2008, 04:55 AM) Unless the defender happens to be an int w/ a 400m scan range and the con isn't close yet. Hard to see a probe if you're more than 200m away from it.
