Yesterday, I've played on 2 teams where the commander tried to bomb in a very uneffective way. Although it's nothing new, I'd just like to explain what is bad bombing with the hope that some comms will learn from it.
Mistake 1: Getting bombers without a plan. I keep seeing comms buying bombers when there are no interesting target to bombs. Pls don't spend 10k on bombers untill you need them(Unless you got slow researchs). You should get bombers after you have a target that is worth bombing, not before(Unless you have a good reason to expect one). That is also true for all techs, but bombers is by far the tech that is bought the most when it shouldn't be bought.
Mistake 2: Bombing far targets: If you use bombers to bomb a target that is close(best example is a sector shared by both teams), most of the time that you spend bombing will end up forcing the other team to defend. If the other team don't defend, you will waste little time and end up with a base kill. If you try to bomb a base 2 sectors away with your whole team, the other team will kills miners, rush back home, camp for your bomber and raise their KBs.
Mistake #3: Bombing useless bases:
I've seen a countless number of teams spending most of their time bombing useless bases while their miners gets killed(And the enemy miners mine freely). The result is that the team that bombed has no econ(they lost it while bombing), it cannot expand and it does not get adv tech. The team that was bombed might have lost a few useless bases, but they have the econ to easily replace them, get extra bases and adv tech. When the targets are far and unimportant(I.e it is not a tech base or a treat), the bombing team will loses even if it always suceed at killing the useless bases(The other team will just keep getting new ones).
Mistake #4: Bad expansion: As with anything in the game, Map control is very important when you bomb. If your team owns the map and has 3 or 4 targets that can be attacked from 3 or 4 sectors, it is very likely that you end up with 1 or 2 very good bombing opportunity. If there's only 1 target that is worth bombing and that you can only bomb it from 1 sector, the other team will keep constant probing on it, possibly calthrop the aleph or even drone it. Dual bomb runs on 2 important targets that are close can give you a high chance of sucess. An obvious single bomb run is easy to stop and it might not even make more than half the other team bother to defend. Bases, when built with bombing in mind, should be close to the target sectors. Trying to bomb a sector that is 7k from the base doesn't make a good primary plan.
Now, I hope I won't have to handle bad bombing for some time /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

And please, dear god, try not to bomb eyed. It's not so hard, just follow some simple rules:
1. Ask your nans to deprobe BEFORE you launch from base
2. Ask your nans if they have eye BEFORE you launch from base
3. Unmount shields and missiles on that bomber!
Another pro tip: don't run into prox, ffs!
1. If you see an enemy scout barreling toward you, it is probably dropping prox!
2. As you approach the base, keep turning very gradually so that your couse isn't straight ahead into the prox the scout is dropping!

Thanks for the tips vly, but can you (or somebody) clairfy what separates a "good target" op/tele from a "useless target" op/tele? I figure tech bases always make for good targets, but not sure about ops/teles. Thanks.Vlymoxyd wrote:QUOTE (Vlymoxyd @ Apr 29 2008, 04:04 PM) Mistake #3: Bombing useless bases:

Think about your mining, uncle, and it will all be figured out.
If they have a sector full of He that you could mine easily for the mins it takes them to get a base back in there, bomb it; especially if you ran out of places to mine already. It's all about timing, and it's all about mining, cause it's all about tech.

dang it! You're stealing stuff I was saving for a You Suck lesson!

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
I think the best way to define a useless target is to define what is a usefull target.
Death got it right, but I'll add more.
Usefull targets:
-Tech bases
-A sector that is in a good position to bomb an enemy tech base and that you can expand to. I.E: You bomb the sector and quickly follow with a con of your own.
-A key sector that you want to build on because it covers most of the sectors with he3 that the other team can mine.
-Sectors that are a treat to your miners or tech bases. Please note that I've often seen comms buy bombers and try very hard to bomb a base that could treaten their tech base if... the enemy had bombers. If the other team has a base that could, in theory be a good place to bomb from, but that they don't have bombers, it's a better idea to kill their miners and making them unable to buy bombers(+adv tech + bases). Also, bombing will take a good part of your team, it will lower your miner offense/defense.
-Easy targets. Example: there's a sector with only a ref. If there's some reasons to kill the ref, even if it's not extremely usefull, being able to do it solo makes it more worthwhile that if you took the whole team. Another example are closes teles as exp.

Step 1 of bombing: Dont buy them
I'm sorry I don't remember any of it. For you the day spideycw graced your squad with utter destruction was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Sunday
