Not bashin ya, just a comment:
Don't assume things like that without playing the game. If you were to play for any reasonable amount of time, you'd see that people around here make some pretty foolish comments even when they should know better. If you show any desire to learn the game, you will quickly be accepted into the community /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

You make assumptions on the game based on posts from Rants?
You do realize it's called Rants for a reason? It lets people blow off steam so they don't yell at newbies in game. I also use it to threaten people with blatant administrative privilege abuse.
Here's what I'll tell you.
Go find ONE game. A single game, where newbies are given protection from being ejected from teams for stupidity, where newbies have 8 weeks courses they can take to reduce the learning curve from near infinity to something manageable, like a year, where veterans are discouraged and outright reprimanded for bashing newbies.
Find me that one other game and we'll talk.

This thread is still in Gameplay Immz.
Notice though Lord Waffle, you only see threads that are going "wtf is going on" in the forum. They don't happen frequently because normally people are at least half way intelligent.

If a couple of posts put them off then they were never serious about trying the game in the first place and would have likely left when they discovered instead of quake in space you need a brain to play this game.Lord Waffle wrote:QUOTE (Lord Waffle @ Mar 28 2008, 06:43 PM) I'm still plan on checking it out, however out of the four of us who were going to, two just said "Why Bother" after reading through some of these posts.
slap wrote:QUOTE (slap @ Oct 7 2009, 01:28 AM) good point, I concede.
I don't think so IB_. It's perfectly possible to be scared off by the forums. It's hard to be "serious about the game" when you haven't really experienced it yet.IB_ wrote:QUOTE (IB_ @ Mar 29 2008, 11:35 AM) If a couple of posts put them off then they were never serious about trying the game in the first place and would have likely left when they discovered instead of quake in space you need a brain to play this game.
But yeah, this is a pro-newb thread, and the actual game has much less grumbling from grizzled vets. Just take a look at the academy files, hop into a ship and get into space. There's plenty to learn, but it's fun.

Yeah, first time poster here too. I've gone through a handful of newbie server games before taking a look at the forums (this being the fourth thread I've looked at). It's good to see people standing up for us newbies, especially to us (0) ones. Frankly, I'm a FreeSpace1/2 vet and the physics of Alleg is tough to compensate for when I'm used to the lack of momentum. Just starting to get the hang of it after spending awhile in a single team game flying around.
However, the first game I did try to join I tried going to the team that had the lesser number of players and was denied. So I tried going to the yellow team and got the same thing. I felt a bit disheartened, honestly, as this was on a newbie server, but I found one about ten minutes later that I could join and fly around not knowing what to do for about 5 minutes before I got my head on straight and started doing something useful like probing.
So anyways, all I'd like to see is a bit more willingness to take us new players on. Delegate us a task such as probing. We may only need a bit of babysitting before we get good at that (leaving your voobs and vets to do the more complicated tasks. Often times, just because we have a number, doesn't mean we're totally worthless. For instance, before even turning on the game, I read and reread all of the information in allegacadamy. I may not be able to dogfight a voob or vet and come away unpodded yet, but that EWS 2 probe I dropped behind the aleph leading to the enemy's garrison caught the bomber as soon as it left the sector. *Shrug* (This is of course not taking into consideration the fact that a good player would probably have noticed the probe so deep in their territory... )

Unitl your have the rank of about eight ALWAYS wait and try to join the team with the HIGHER combined rank. If you cant join and it keeps happening POST it here calling out the commander but make sure that you weren't let on the team with the HIGHER combined rank. I leave it to you to figure why you should always be trying to join the team with the HIGHER rank, consider it a test if you want /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />ShenBear wrote:QUOTE (ShenBear @ Apr 10 2008, 10:14 PM) Yeah, first time poster here too. Thanks

edit: Oh and stop dropping probes behind the aleph. Worthless unless you get lucky and the next opponent ship through is the bomber. Drop them away from the aleph but still close enough to "see" bomber when it enters. A spotted probe is a dead probe. How far? Take Cadet I they'll tell you /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

you know, I took a look at Cadet I and I thought it said that they meet at regular times? If so, I don't know if I'll be able to do that. In college right now and with the intense work load, I don't think I can make the commitment to be on at a certain time every week. Otherwise, the Cadet system sounds great!
Oh, and thanks for the advice. I knew to push them back a ways a bit. Did I read it correctly when it said that Probe1 has a scan range of 500m?
