Please forgive the noobish nature of my question but why would that be a good thing? Usually, the tp's I see getting destroyed are the ones closest to the opposition in a strategic sector. I don't seem to recall anyone going after a home tp, I mean if you can get a bomber with nans in the home sector I would think the prime target would be the base and not a tp. So I guess I don't understand the benefit of an extra one.

I've seen it done. We were bios, turtling, and they kept blowing our home tps. So our commander just started pumping them our continously. I think we had 5 at one stage.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
I once built 2, when the enemy was trying to galv it. They never succeeded though.....
