Using squad membership as skill filter doesn't work, simply because skill isn't the sole pre-requisite for squad membership.
Also, I hope you realize that this is trading future for present, right? If you're squadded (unless you're in that retirement home - you know who I'm talking about /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />), make a list of your squadmates you consider vet-server worthy... then take a look at how many of them weren't even in this community 6 months ago.
Allegiance - The Future
It's not about skill so much as people who have made a commitment to high level gameplay.
And at one night a week I don't see that there will be any significant harm done to non-squadded and new players. The recent influxes of new people should be able to sustain a reasonable game whilst those squadded vets who want to play can go off and play together.
If it's only a way of getting 2 smaller sized games going rather than 1 giant one then it's no bad thing IMO.

I think it is fine to have a squadded player game or two (emphasis on game or two - not a full night of play) without having to worry about long-term harm to the community. You don't need Ozzy to babysit this project either. Just use the beta server, post the game server password on the Officer's Club if you want to get it going and pass it on to any non-squadded vet you want to invite in. Heck, anyone that even knows how to get on the beta server probably has a good enough grasp of the game anyway. No real need for a password.
Interesting and entirely understandable that people in this thread pro the idea are squadded and therefore would be 'allowed' to participate whilst the majority against are un-squadded and would therefore not be 'allowed' to participate.
Let me posit a question:
If this happens and takes off, I think it is fair to assume that a lot of people are going to want to join squads in order to take part. Lets estimate at around 50-100 initially, then a lot more with every CDT graduation. So, are all the squads accepting people? Have the people in favour considered this? At some point the current squads will say 'no more' as they have grown too large, at which point you have a lock-out.
*sigh*

That's of little concern really. I would say the squads manage their rosters relative to the size of other squads. A year ago all of the squads were smaller (their active player lists). I think each had around 20-25 members at that time. Now they are pushing well into the 30's. Being a big squad doesn't hurt anything so long as your competition has a roughly equal number of members.
edit- good question though

I think that you are all missing the point, squads can make the game much more intense, and in doing make it more fun and playable. Even the worst geeting your butt kicked squad games is 10 times better then the average pickup game. Some of the best games I have played involved teamate that you could count on doing what they are supposed to. It is hard to play when you don't know if the guy or gal next to you in a sector is going to attack that miner with you, or decide that they need to fly 4000 miles away to get that shiney powerup for quad damge. And merc you really are missing out by not being in a squad, there is no way around that. Squads have always been the best part of this game, I think most people would agree. If you want new players, you need to get them into squads. There really is no substitute. All team based games are better when you are on a persistant team. I would love to see a persistant squad server where stacking is irrelevent. The stackers can stay on the pickup server whoring noobies, at least I won't have to chase their boosting back to base so they don't get podded butts around to pod kill them, heh.
Squad servers devoid of newbies simply will make an improvement in gameplay, for better or for worse. Let me remind of you of a recent game involving 2 ass ships....
Also, the worst newly squaded cadet is going to be 10 times better than the best newbie.
No newbie hate here, but just stating the obvious.
