Well, since this is my first post, hi everyone!
I'd like to begin this with the obligatory apologetic paragraph. I'm new here and I'm trying to learn whilst avoiding flames (at least, as much as humanly possible /doh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="doh.gif" /> ). Therefore, this'll be a long (and potentially boring) post. Sorry 'bout that. While I'm at it, I'd also like to add that I've considered other subforums for this. I've finally decided to write in General mostly because my post isn't going to be technical at all.
I'd say that my first "contact" with this community was made as I was reading that thread:
http://www.freeallegiance.org/forums/index...showtopic=22553
These are true words (I suppose) but it's also quite a frightening introduction for a newb like me. Therefore, I've decided to avoid joining a game until I'm quite sure of what I'm doing.
Anyhow, I've read the part of the knowledge base about how to get started. Now that I've installed the game and created my callsign, I've got to learn w/o poking in the wrong places. Now, don't get me wrong, the idea of a virtual space flight school is pretty cool. The thing is that, at first, I'd rather have some kind of manual that doesn't involve other people. You see, I don't have a lot of free time these days and I can't help but think that a virtual class isn't gonna help me relax (which is, in my book, the big point behind gaming).
One could say that this: http://plan.volia.org/misc/allegiance/index.shtml is the way to go. Well, I've read most the articles there and the info is kind of "buzzing" uselessly in my head. I strongly doubt I could be useful to a team ATM. I need to pratice.
Looking at the list of games available, I get the impression that "everything means something". Yes, there are games titled "newbie training". The thing is that most of them are, ATM, quite empty, giving me the impression that these are some kind of one on one training rooms.
Now, I know this'll sound a bit vague. I also know that, in many communities, this leads to "gtfo, you're wasting my time". Still, I'll give it a try.
What do you guys think I should do from there? Should I definitely join the class? Are there actual newbs-only games where no one will care if I screw up? Should I just erase the game and move on (feel free to say it if you really think it's the case, just avoid adding some kind of insult or expletive to your post /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )?
Basically, I'd like some advices which would help me start my "Allegiance career" properly.
Thanks and neat little game y'all got there!

First of all, welcome! Excellent post, I think you will fit in here.
QUOTE Should I join the Cadet class?
Yes. Without a doubt, this will be the fastest route to becoming a good pilot.
QUOTE Are there newb only games?
Yes, but dont play them too much, you wont get any better at the game. You will only become better at the game by playing against people better than you.
QUOTE Should you just erase the game?
NO. This is the best game ever. I'm not kidding one bit.
If you have questions (ever) just ask them. You will always be near someone that is willing to answer your questions.
My name in game is +TheBored@SRM, please feel free to ask me anything you would like /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hey Olsheep,
The best thing you can do is join Cadet. Im new to the game as well i only started it about 3 months ago. I started the cadet course after being a "noob" for 4 weeks. Cadet taught me everything i needed to know about the game and who is who an what is what, Also people will respect you for giving time to learn to play allegiance. Its a good community and it has been said before that for every 1 bad person there is 3 good people willing to help.
have a look at http://cadet.freeallegiance.org
P.s If im ever ingame, id be willing to show you the ropes and teach you a few things ive learnt.

Definitely stick around OlSheep, there is nothing like Allegiance, believe me I have looked. The community is no different than any other, except for its size. It's pretty close knit because it's the same few hundred players that play regularly. You'll soon get to know the anuses, just avoid talking to them. If you are new and you screw-up, for every loudmouth chewing you out there will generally be three taking your side and telling them to STFU.
Most important rules for new peeps IMO.
1. Read the chat.
2. Don't ask the commander what to do next, he has enough on his plate.
3. Play on the newbie server for a week or two to familiarise yourself with the interface.
4. After this period join cadet.
5. Ignore the abrasive morons who think that Allegiance is real-life.
6. If you are in game, and really need to know something, PM someone with a + or ? prefix an @Alleg suffix or pretty much anyone in a squad (@GB @PK @XT etc.) or a newbie tag higher than yours (Most new people love to pass on what they have learned). If they don't have the time to explain, PM someone else with one of those tokens.
7. Visit the academy.
8. Don't get frustrated and leave in a week. People gain respect by how they conduct themselves, some of these people have been playing for years. I guarantee they have seen everything and done most things in Allegiance. Telling them that you just solo galved a refinery or a tele won't impress them. Nanning a bomber to kill something, definitely will, they will tell you this, there is no need for you to tell them.
9. When you kill your first miner or constructor and people yell their congratulations, you will realise how smart you were not to quit after the first week. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, will make violent revolution inevitable. John F. Kennedy.
Read the F1 help menu stuff too if you're looking for a manual, although it doesn't cover all of this great game. It's a good place to start.
Play the training missions once, they're a bit rubbish and annoying but they do teach you some useful things. Play on the newbie servers if you feel the need. The newbie servers are not always populated and to be honest the games on them tend to be less than useful for someone with a real intent to learn. Play them to get the feel for how a ship hancles and so on, then head over to the main server.
As Ducky said, ask questions. But if you don't get an instant reply don't bug people, it's often worth asking about things in the break between games if you can cope with reading between the spam /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Join cadet, DO IT NOW!!!!!! It doesn't teach you everything, but it's the single best way to become a competant player and it gives you a great base to build from in a squad or by yourself, whichever you choose.
Anyway, welcome to allegiance, the best game on the web, kiss your real life goodbye /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

The Academy has a lot of info. The Cadet program is great cos you learn only a bit at once.
When I started to play I flew almost always the same ship (scout) and did the same tasks (probing and nanning). Then I slowly got into turrets, then fighters and interceptors, then stealth fighters, stealth bombers... and so on.
You'll find some of the first games are frustrating. Everybody seems to kill you, your weapons seem useless against them and commander's orders seem crazy and impossible to follow. But that happens on ALL multiplayers games, isn't it? The difference is Allegiance becomes greater and greater as you learn. You'll always remember the first time you blew a recently built Supremacy station with your stealth bomber. /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

The moral of the story is: Don't try to dogfight anyone that isn't also a rookie. Having to waste time podding rookies that won't stop chasing me is annoying.
Cadet feeds you info in driblets, on a week-by-week system, so you won't get information overload. If your team can afford an AFK player, you could try sitting in base and watching a vet via the command view. PM them when they aren't busy and ask them why they are doing ... whatever you are watching them do. (You can trace any given player's movements by hitting f6, highlighting their name, and pressing 'Take me to'.)

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
