If you are interested in seeing this with a longer historical perspective, I started tracking it several years ago: http://allegiance.fragfest.net/stats/ . Both the number of "active accounts" and the number of "online players." There is one year worth of data available at all times.

I was streaming to ustream.tv using a mix of stuff. It was VERY convoluted because of what and how I wanted to do it (delaying a live stream), but basically I took the HDMI output from my PC and used an HDMI capture card in another PC to capture the video and used Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) to mix ...
