You could try http://www.installjammer.com its free not sure how easier it is though. I know Nullsoft's is the best open source installer.

I had the same problem just now too. It seems the update from 2.1 to 2.2 isn't working. I was put in a endless updating loop. It would run the update and not update anything. I hit login again and it would say it's going to update. The Help > Repair fixed it.
