Once uponn a time a company that called themselves Blizzard made a game. They labeled it Starcraft. It was a game about making dozens of click per second to get your soldiers to do what you wanted them, and if you stopped clicking on them for any reason they would get turned into bloodstains on the ground.

Once upon a time a company calling themselves Microsoft Research made a game called Allegiance. It had all of the basic tools one would need to make dozens of clicks per second with a goal in mind. Surely there is a Starcraft player or two somewhere out there in the community, right?

Assume your peasants are completely blind and deaf and will do everything you don't want them to do if they do not have an Attack or Go To order. If you have four ships and want them to move somewhere as a group, give three of them orders to follow the fourth and tell the fourth to Go To a specific target.

Since we are a full micro-heavy commander we can even do slashing-attack tactics rather then dogfighting for at least one fighter wing - tell them to move in more or less a straight line across the battlefield and switching targets as necessary to have them only attack what it is front of them. When (if?) they reach the opposite side of the battlefield, give them a couple of Go To orders to regroup them quick then have them turn around for another slashing run.

I am sure that a lot of veterans will complain about being treated like this game is Starcraft. After centuries of playing the same game, they should instead be welcoming the change :D

Tried it. Didn't work. Unlike starcraft people will:

1) ignore your orders
2) switch to a different objective at the worst possible time
3) accept the order but not execute it
4) deviate from what you said very soon

It's not because people are stupid (well obviously depends on the case), it's because everyone has a self developed idea of what needs to be done and to them that is a polite way of them saying: "$#@! you, I know what's best for our team"

Commanding is more about coordinating than the micro management approach you're imagining. Players need to be educated enough to know where to be and what to do so that when you announce your objective, they act appropriately. Takes time and experience. Small games can't afford to have the "uneducated" flying around doing nothing like the days when we had 20+ players per team. You're dealing with the same problem that has always existed except it's worse now.

Liquor will help. Drink until you don't care.

The problem with microing is that I am only smarter than maybe three or four ordinary people put together. Any bigger of a game than that, and you're better off using your own brain.

Ordinary people, or ordinary players? Because I'd suggest you're about as smart as ten or twenty ordinary players :P

I'm still unsure if this is satire because the longest running joke in allegiance is that if you were good at starcraft you could totally command. Literally, people would log in and say "give me com, I'm good at starcraft" and we would all have a good chuckle.

well, right off the base you are engaging in some magical thinking with this assumption. The only units that give a damn about your orders are the AI, and even then, they aren't very bright.

You realize that people have to ACCEPT the commands to get any real data from it? they aren't going to sit there hitting accept over and over again.

secondarily, straight lines = dead, as our illustrious whores can demonstrate for you in stunningly wide array of ways.

I will mutiny and boot you if you did this to me. The ban will totally be worth it.

I'm sorry that you probably won't ever get to see high level play, but I'm severely tempted to reinstall just to demonstrate in a quick dogfight how garbage your tactics are.

I like this "slashing attack" idea tbh. Would be really fun to have top-kills in a game while only ever flying a scout.
