Ive seen many answers to this question and want someone who lives across the pond
First my opinion.....no Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland are not countries. If anything they should be considered states in the same way the US is made up of 50 states....the UK is made up of four and Great Britian is made up of......???? Well im not sure. Your history is somewhat confusing
Anyway that is how i see it....now i need someone from over there to give thier best opinion
hey Brits
Wales was a state, centuries ago. Today only Scotland can be considered as "state". It has his own government and there will be a vote in the next years to leave UK.
Wales has been assimilated by England...

England, Scotland and Wales are all countries. Northern Ireland is more like a region although for all purposes it is a country.
The United Kingdom is a country made up of the above countries.

Let us clear up what a Country is. I have read many difrerent meanings and i think the best measure(at leats to me) 1) has membership in the UN 2) has a government that conducts foriegn policy and coducts its on trade agreements etc etc
By those two measures England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not nations. Please correct me if im wrong
For what i know and have read England was and indepent Kingdom from before 1066. After the Norman invasion England annex territory of Scotland and Wales to become what was know as Great Britian. After annexing The island of Ireland which was made of of small counties but was not a united nation or kingdom itself, Great Britian became the United Kingdom. Then with the discovery of the New World Great Britian became and Empire. What confuses me is that shouldnt the Empire have been called the Empire of the United Kingdom?
Ill clear it up a little more.
England Wales and Scotland make up Great Britain
The United Kingdom is Great Britian and Ireland( later only Northern Ireland)
The British Empire and Commonwealth is the above and all the colonies around the world
Am i close?

Sounds in no way, shape, or form like America.TakingArms wrote:QUOTE (TakingArms @ Mar 3 2014, 11:52 AM) I think of it this way. The UK is filled with a bunch of surly people, but they have really good manners and consequently are able to coexist as a single state even though they all sort of hate each other.
