So, for the LAN party helped hosting the weekend 11-13 Feb I made some key maps (4 pages).
Keymaps
It was suggested by some that I should put them up, perhaps on the wiki, as a first step for new players to get a "simple" key map.

My questions to you (yes I know I am inviting calamity here) are:
1) should I bother at all on hosting these pictures and the related inputmap1.mdl files on the wiki as an alternative to new players?
2) should I spend another one or two weeks to make minor modifications, like zoom to mouse wheel?
3) should I spend a couple of hours and edit the key map pictures to fit US/UK/International key template?
4) should I spend another couple of weeks getting input from the community on key placement and function bindings to improve this further?

My intent with these key mappings for the LAN party was to make something simple (as few keys as possible, keep default when possible so it still match training missions a little) with a colour coded paper for easy reference (I need to target an enemy ship, ah! targeting is green, where are the green keys, ah! there they are click click click ah! miner targeted).
Any edits to these key maps involving me would still follow this intent as I am not interested in making the ultimate key map for experienced players (which I don't think we can do as every player has his/her own style requiring different keys and placements).

I am aware that the joystick mapping wont work for many as the available buttons vary between joysticks, but it is at least a start.

Flame away! :)

Nice work on these keymaps.

From the questions you posed I think you should do #1 and possibly #3. 2 and 4 are unnecessary. If a new player takes to your simple mappings and enjoys the game then he will inevitably modify his mapping to his own liking, which is rewarding in itself. You can't be jedi until you can build your own light saber.

Yep - just toss 'em up on the wiki as a starting place. They can be tweaked later if you want later.
