I plan to make videos, to be posted on youtube, explaining the AFS material with demonstration. I am willing to organize this project if the community will help me with it.

I need the following roles filled:

Scriptwriters - who will both write the narration and what the ships will do, everything will be scripted.

Videographers – must own a full copy of fraps, and have a fast enough connection to upload the video file, once compressed reasonably to somewhere the editors and narrators can access it. Note that some videos may require more than one videographer for multiple video angles.

Narrators – must own a decent microphone and a good voice. Will record a narration track separate from the video file, and upload it somewhere.

Video editors – will splice the video from the videographers, add in the narration track, compress the video, and upload it to youtube.

Pilots – enough said. Be able to follow the script (we’ll use mumble to keep everyone coordinated during the recording). Be competent at everything we discuss in the AFS manual. Vets will be given priority.

NOTE: I AM NOT ACCEPTING PILOT APPLICATIONS AT THIS TIME. I WILL PUT OUT A CALL FOR PILOTS WHEN THE FIRST SCRIPT IS WRITTEN


Current tasks:
Divide up the AFS material (don’t edit anything, just deal with topics now) into what topics should be covered in which video. Keep in mind these videos should be no more than 10 minutes in length, and we should probably aim for 5 minutes. Its better to digest this information in short bits.

Start writing scripts.

Any suggestion on where we should keep our correspondence about the above tasks is appreciated. Is there a specific subforum on these boards where it should go?

As an example, you can find my script for the “how to be a constructor nanite scout” below. It probably needs work, but it’s a good start.

i can help with script writing and also video. windows live isn't the best compression, if you
want me to use something else let me know. i've had idea's about this also.
i have avs video editor4 but have not purchased it. maxes out at 1 min. 30 sec.

If you don't have actual video editing software, let me or someone who actually can do it. I've got a macbook with an old version of final cut pro.

Scriptwriting is much appreciated.


If anyone has suggestions on what topic(s) a video should cover, post them so we can start writing scripts.

I volunteer for script writing.

Where do you want to start?

At the very beginning? How a ship moves, drag, inertia, (side)thrusters, booster,...?
Those videos could be pretty short and simple, just a scout and / or an interceptor moving while an explanation is given.

A short protrait of each ship type? Make a nice shot of each and add some action shots together with short explanation.

Probing? Together with F3 view this might be a nice start, especially since it is the thing most new players are supposed to do for the first games.

Nanning, miner d, bomber nanning? Much more action :-)

Proxing? Might be boring (although I find it exciting) but this is imo one of the best topics for video explanation as you can really show and explain what is happening.

Or do you want to go more into things like tactical moves? Explain a bomb run with several variations, how to defend against it and what each role is supposed to do?

As I said above, pick a topic you think you can teach, and start writing a script for it. We'll refine it, then organize a group to record it.

There's no topic too simple to go over. For new players, a good explanation of ship control would be useful. Some things such as exploiting the forward thruster, over-turning and boosting to make sharp turns and such are not immediately apparent.

Explanations of the best roles for each type of ship is doable, but you don't really need to fly to demonstrate that. The wiki covers that pretty well.

A video on which sectors to probe, how to pick which rocks and alephs to probe in that sector, and where to drop probes would be a huge help.

Nanning is too general. Split it into things such as con nanning (as my script in my original post), miner D nanning, bomber nan, GS nan, capship nan, interceptor (combat) nan, and so on

Proxing is also too general. Maybe one video on aleph proxing and red-door proxing, another on open-air proxing against enemies chasing you, bomb/galv runs, etc.

More complicated topics don't need to be covered yet. We should stick to the basics first. If later we want vieos at a Cadet-II level, fine by me. However, tactical stuff such as when to bomb and where comes up, its not as important to cover. These are intended to get new players up to speed faster. A short 5-minute video, say, on probing, followed by going to a game and spending some time figuring out good probing skills, is much more beneficial to a newb than a 30 minute presentation by a top comm on the finer tactics of when and where to bomb, fake-bomb, dual-bomb, etc.
