I'm curious about this.
Personally, I read most of the AFS stuff before I played a single game of alleg, and worked out a keyboard layout I liked pretty quickly (which with minimal modification I still use now and don't intend to change). I think that I ended up reading all the AFS content within the first week I played.
It would be interesting to compare time (both physical time and time spent playing) from newbishness to voobishness in relation to speed of reading and absorbing the theory.
Starting Alleg
I didn't at all have the patience to do that.
A lot of the good newbs nowadays read quite a bit of the material first, it seems, but I never understood it -- why would you invest so much time into learning about a game when you haven't even really tried playing yet, and don't know what to expect, or whether it's really worth your time?
So, I read and skimmed over the very basic stuff, so that I wouldn't be completely lost, and did the training missions, and then jumped right in. Fortunately back then the newbie servers weren't dead yet, so I got plenty of time to play around on them, trying everything out and figuring out how everything worked. (For god's sake, BRING THEM BACK!
) A few very kind vets also helped me quite a bit.
After playing a little bit I realised the game was awesome, and then I started reading more and more of the material.
... Of course I'm still a complete voob even after playing for several years, so I may not be a great example.

No AFS/CDT/Wiki when I started. Just boot resigns by nak constantly
I'm sorry I don't remember any of it. For you the day spideycw graced your squad with utter destruction was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Sunday

My apologies.

Got a PM from Romeo after my first forum post encouraging me to join cadet.
Joined a game immediately after completing the old training missions.
Couldn't tell the difference between a nanite and a tomato plant and still found the "Stop Donating" button within about 45 seconds.
Got booted.
Joined Cadet.
Got training sessions from RT's while waiting for cadet to start.
Ripped to an assault ship by accident.
Got eyed.
Got booted.
Graduated a voob 8 weeks later.
Still a voob - see "Zero Medal".
