As far as Allegiance client goes, it works very well on win server 2008. I have server 2008 standard edition x64 installed on an MSI intel G33 mobo matx with an intel pentium d processor at 3ghz. I like the operating system, seems to work better on this little desktop than xp or vista. Also have 2gb of ddr2 800mhz ram installed. This post is being written using server 2008 x64 standard.

Its the same architecture.. so there is only a licens which differs from the two version's
And its a bit fast to say that 2008 servers cant handle older application.. which it can, even 32bit on a native 64bit OS.

QUOTE R4 server broken on windows server 2008, possibly[/quote]
perhaps it is too fast to say it, and it was jsut something specific about the guy's server setup.
i' just posting it here because the 3FL guys can't get it working on their 2k8 box, but can on xp using the same steps

Zap I think mad meant that the
Allegiance server is different than the client and just because the Allegiance client runs does not mean the Alleg server will. We had a problem getting the server to run on Win2K machines while it ran fine on NT. It turned out to be a problem with how the server polled ports.
I've not looked through all the threads but I can see how the Alleg server might have problem with an OS. The server requires a lot more ports to be open for one thing so a security setting could be causing problems.

I did not have a copy of Alleg server to test on the system I described. I thought I'd inform the community that alleg client functions ok on a 64bit platform, and also on a server platform, for whatever that information is worth. There's another point worth noting I think that possibly not everyone is aware of, and that is that you don't need heavy duty server hardware to run a server. What this means is that you don't have to buy a 4 way server mobo that'll cost you a couple thousand, plus Xeon's that could cost another couple thousand each, not to mention the rest of the hardware. For Alleg, a cheap dual core or quad core cpu should suffice, and for the porting you can add some fancy 10 gigabit nics and some other networking hardware that should handle the game with ease without crashing as often as it has been crashing lately. Plus you get all that without having to spend thousands on a heavy duty server platform. By building a machine that matches the specifications of the game you will have a much better performing gaming experience, plus saving lots of money. The only drawback of course is the server operating system which can cost a pretty penny. But I'm sure there's workarounds for that too.

The issue came up as part of 3fl's attempts at hosting a server. And they host a LOT of stuff.
