Hello everyone! I think this game looks like fun and would like to give this game another try under wine, or gather a small army of programmars from www.ubuntuforums.org to rewrite the thing in OpenGL, however, I can't create a play account. The website being linked to says the domain expired 8 days ago, on the 20th of November, and is pending renewal or deletion
(BTW, I don't have the skill to rewrite the game myself, but I am currently learning python, so I could write scripts and stuff to be "glued" into the C++ source)

ASGS, our security system, will not run in am emulated environment such as WINE. Allegiance itself will (to varying degrees), but you wont be able to connect to the servers.

Do you know what the name WINE stands for?Adam4 wrote:QUOTE (Adam4 @ Nov 28 2008, 11:29 AM) ASGS, our security system, will not run in am emulated environment such as WINE. Allegiance itself will (to varying degrees), but you wont be able to connect to the servers.
Wine Is Not an Emulator
wine isn't an emulator. It provides a windows API to programs. It can even compile windows executabled on it's own.
Your security system tough... I don't see how you could stop it from running in WINE, because programs get told they are running in windows. Actually, you can set the windows version:
2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, me, xp, server 2003, vista, or server 2008. If you run a program for winXP in 3.0 mode, you actually get an error saying the OS isn't supported.
Anyway, perhaps we'll just have to take the source code that stands on microsoft's research server, port it ore get it to run great in wine, and then set up our own server.
Nobody can stop anyone from doying that, as long as it's not for commercial purposes. It's open-source after all

Sorry to break it to you, but ASGS is .net closed source obfuscated (thankfully) and Allegiance's source code is free as in beer but not free as in speech.
That said, somebody HAS reported the ASGS client working under WINE, but we haven't been able to replicate this.
As for porting this to other OS: be our guest, but be aware that there's an EULA over the code and that the code is usually defined "an horrible mess".
In the unlikely case you are still cool with this, feel free to start off with our community releases.

I realize ASGS is closed source, and offcourse that is a good thing. However, I meant that someone fromt he Ubuntu project (whe have enough money: the emergency reserves are 10 million)Badp wrote:QUOTE (Badp @ Nov 28 2008, 11:50 AM) Sorry to break it to you, but ASGS is closed source obfuscated (thankfully) and Allegiance's source code is free as in beer but not free as in speech.
would buy couple servers. Since the game already runs more or less in wine, we could fix it there, and have a couple of 1000(0) ubuntu users play it within a few weeks. The forums have more than 700000 members after all, 75000 of which are active. this doesn't include the dozens or so, large, local forums. In the Netherlands for example, the ubuntu-nl.org forum has about 16000 members, tough this is only a small country.
And while the adjustments this community made may be closed source, the code MS released in 2004, is realtively free: you can do with it what you want, as long as you don't make any money from it, and don't
violate any laws (Surprise...) . If we create a project on sourceforge.net, and have a dozen of so, mostly proffesional, programmers working on it, I think we could make our own modifications
BTW, like I said above, your player-account registration site's domain has expired 8 days ago and is awaiting renewal or deletion!:

So let me get this straight: Eragon came here, to our forums, and basically said, "Nice work Free Allegiance, but we over at Ubuntu can do a lot better."
If you want to play with this community I'd suggest not flying under the nick Eragon.

Shuttleworth does have more resources than we do and the guys at Ubuntu do have more experience with Linux and with porting stuff to Linux than we do. I just wonder how much time and brainhours will be spent on dev'ing, testing and packaging to games universe.phoenix1 wrote:QUOTE (phoenix1 @ Nov 28 2008, 09:25 PM) So let me get this straight: Eragon came here, to our forums, and basically said, "Nice work Free Allegiance, but we over at Ubuntu can do a lot better."

Sentence edited out.
Eragon: you need to fix your hosts file. Go check the thread in News.

It wasn't that they could do a better job fixing the game to work on linux. It was more the tone of his "we'll take the source code and make our own server and there's not a thing you guys can do to stop us!"
Eragon, if you get 1000 additional players through Ubuntu, come back and let us know because I have a feeling this community would be VERY interested in changing the way ASGS worked, or dropping it completely and replacing it with something else, to pick up those 1,000 players.
