Hey guys! After two full days banging my head against my router's firewall I'm finally through to the games lobby! I spent most of yesterday without the internet. It turns out that my attempts to have the world see ports 2300-2400 somehow effed up things so bad that my ISP refused to give my router so much as the time of day. I got frustrated to the point of hitting the reset button and suddenly everything worked. Fancy that. I guess factory default is "allow the internet to brutally rape every port you own". Lucky me!

I have yet to play anything other than the training missions, but that'll change soon enough. Stuck at work until 4 today but I'll float around taking up space this evening. With luck I might even crash into an enemy probe and kill it!

I've got a bunch of clan experience under my belt in various FPS games and obviously this is quite different, but what that does mean is that I have no problem taking direction from my betters. I'll do my best to absorb every scrap of knowledge I can from you guys. I've read the wiki over a couple times, but I'm holding off on the classes until my tax refund brings me a new headset. My current mic sounds like it's translating my words into rhino farts and the headphones shift volume randomly. Needless to say, it's been a tough couple of weeks. Hopefully my temporary handicaps won't be too much of a problem.

I wouldn't worry too much about your headset at first.

Seriously - get in game soon, sign up for AFS. A large part of the benefit of AFS is having a forum where you can ask and discuss questions, so the mic is irrelevant to it.

Edit: Oh and Welcome Darkweeble (like the nick)

So I got home all amped up to play and again I can't connect to the lobby. Ports 2300-2400 have mysteriously closed in the hours of inactivity. I suspect gremlins. I have no problem with any of this nonsense when I bypass my router and connect straight to the computer so it's clearly not a software firewall. I'm fast approaching the end of my expertise so I'll be moving my woes to the tech forum later this evening perhaps. Gonna warn you guys now: It's a D-Link.

I have a D-Link. The default settings are fine. (You really don't need to diddle with it in my experience - port forwarding isn't required anymore. The info on the wiki does say it's outdated info.)

Welcome new people!
I personally prefer Lynksys routers.Other over the counter brands are too iffy. You may get one that works, but I've seen so many Belkin,D-link,etc. crap out.And I don't mean die completely. That would make diag too easy. They work, then they don't,then they make you reset the modem and after that, they work awhile, then they don't.Then they lose that last configuration because they have a cheap Eprom.Saving 20+ dollars isn't worth it.

/Sorry FreeB,I had to dis-agree
