My flying style will now be "Grab a fighter or int and boostram the enemy a bajillion times until they die"

People just moved on. There are so many things to do nowadays. Back in 2005 when I joined, Allegiance was pretty much the end all and be all of free online games. Nothing remotely matched its complexity or entertainment value, while still being free.

I was 15.

Now, I'm 22. I go to college, I go out, I have hundreds of other games to play that are not only free, but offer the same level of gameplay while also being constantly updated with a large, dedicated staff who are paid. So if I'm a 15 year old gamer on the internet in 2012 looking for a free game to play, why would I play Allegiance when there are alternatives like LoL? Plus since digital distribution got popular, I can buy almost any game I want on Steam and have multiplayer fun on that.

Furthermore, online console gaming has become ubiquitous. Seven years ago, did anyone play Xbox, Gamecube or PS2 online? Okay some people did, but compare that to MW3, BF3, GoW3 and MvC3 online now.

The reason so many people left is not because we discourage a fun environment, but real life happened. Not only did our entertainment options expand dramatically, us kids who were either still in high school or college back then are now in the workforce. Plus, I totally disagree with the notion that taking the game seriously kills the fun factor. When has it been fun to lose badly? Or play poorly? I, and countless others do not derive entertainment from getting our asses kicked or having baddies on our team fly around in circles while we're trying to get things done. The aim of the game is to win, and winning is fun. That is why we try to win.

Allegiance doesn't have that Skinner Box addictiveness that characterizes many online games nowadays. There is a reason why every single game has achievements now, and even in FPS there's a leveling up system. People like to see their numbers go up and have persistent awards. Yes, we have a leaderboard, squad tourneys and personal stats but it just isn't the same as having a nice shiny badge, new unlocks and skins and all that jazz that developers have coded into modern games.

This game has a very high degree of customization, even I made some skins at one point, but all that data was client side. I may have had fun flying around in my fancy skins but nobody else saw them. Same thing with voice packs.

So if I have any ideas to make this game more competitive, it would be to make it more like other contemporary games. The downtime between games is an issue - lobby chatroom (rather than match chat rooms). The ability to spectate games. Persistent rewards, like skins, medals, achievements, etc. Fancy leaderboards within the in-game interface. Embedded guides within the game itself (recommended load-outs, checklist of tasks on the HUD, stronger tool tips, tips of the day, etc). A lot of people don't know faction stats, they're not easily obtainable within the game itself and you have to go to the wiki to find out. A feature on the faction select panel that lists a faction's stats, and maybe even strategies would be really awesome.

I know these are just pipe dreams, and I don't know how to code so I wouldn't be able to help. But if a bunch of wiz coders ever got around to doing this, Allegiance could become competitive again.

easily the two biggest things are what kap and crono mentioned:
long wait times between games
and
hundreds of alternatives
