Mryddlin wrote:QUOTE (Mryddlin @ Jan 19 2010, 09:45 AM) But GOD it would be nice to see, at a glance, who accepted the duties instead of just sending over the chat 'I need miner D', i.e.:

- Miner Defence (3) (expandable trees so you can see the names/ranks of the players that accepted that task)
- Pilot A
- Pilot B
- Pilot C
- Miner Offense (6)
- Escort (2)
- Unassigned (first list to check for noobs and people to boot, everyone should be grabbing a role and based on the numbers assigned it would be easy to figure out what is needed, i.e. if Miner D have 1 person doing the task it's obvious that more are need and you join that role as it't the highest priority)

Having a general orders screen that the commander can push the 5 tasks that P1 laid out (or more) up and down in priority and the commander gets a message when someone joins that task would help a lot.

Taking that a step further the chat and wing system should be extended to automatically enroll a pilot into a wing/chat channel when they join the role and automatically subscribe to the proper drone notifications (i.e. you are on miner D you see the miner move orders, when a miner is finished and heading back to base the miner should broadcast that to the miner D wing).

The chat defaults should be: Commander = Team Chat, Pilots = Role Chats, Unassigned = Team Chat, with the commander having the ability to move pilots into roles with a couple of key strokes (i.e. your commanding and you need someone to do miner D that you trust, slap them into the miner D role and system notifies them of the role change)..

Anyway I know this mainly a thought experiment and I will keep any further discussion on communication issues to the development forums.
Divided TS channels during Alleg Wars are a great example of why divided comms do not work (9-11 is too. Is there a 9-11 equivalent of Godwinning a thread?). Roles change too quickly to justify the overhead of officially declaring roles; and limiting the info you receive is actually a disability because you have the power and time to react to almost any situation in the game, if you are told immediately.

SharpFish wrote:QUOTE (SharpFish @ Jan 19 2010, 01:03 PM) I wonder why those excusing arbitrary exercise of power always make this self-justifying excuse? This is absolutely classic self-rationalisation, the stuff of which, in the real world, revolutions are made. Your odious elitism only confirms the point. Why SHOULD new players give this game a second chance when they get abused in this manner? Well surprise surprise, a lot of them don't. Even some of the old hands, no doubt, get bored of the power-tripping narcissists who feel it's perfectly reasonable to exclude people from, you know, actually playing the game at whim.
To facetiously reword your argument, "My right to dick off during the game overrules everyone else's right to play in a way which will win".
Your punctuation is impressive, though.

Jimen wrote:QUOTE (Jimen @ Jan 19 2010, 01:17 PM) Well, then, let me clarify. You, while obviously having your $#@!ing panties in a bunch over getting booted a lot, are a total idiot, albeit (see? I can use fancy words too! shut the $#@! up) a fairly hilarious one. Every other person I've ever seen make a "waaaaaah I get booted a lot even though I don't do anything wrong" thread always ends up vanishing or tantruming after someone shows up with a detailed description of their vooby behavior. Does that mean I'm an elitist "excusing [the] arbitrary exercise of power"? No, it means, that,

YOU SUCK

I'm not going to bother respondiong to the rest, so I'll just use this outstanding example of idiocy (not to mention naked anti-intellectuialism).

You're absolutely confirming my point with your "let them eat cake" crap. You've got a bunch of self-righteous coms who exercise their totally unwarranted power to the detriment of the game and all you can do is band together and fling @#(! like monkeys in a zoo. Nothing but excuses and abuse and revelling in your in-group status. There's a word for this sort of garbage and that word is "bullying".

Now it doesn't actually affect me a great deal. I don't get booted a whole lot, and usually when I do, it serves only to demonstrate that I was smarter than the com. On the few occassions in which I've been booted for a genuine error, the boot has no effect other than massaging the coms ego, because I was already aware of the mistake myself. In the rest, it's a case of the com failing to be aware of what was going on, failing to understand how things looked, or giving contradictory orders. Frankly, I can live with it.

But the fact is that the atmosphere in which you idiots revel basically makes you into a bunch of self-regarding arseholes. Again, this is something I don't particularly care about, but as this thread so abundantly shows the fact that you lose players and can't keep the ones you have means your own crass belligerence is self defeating. As I've remarked before, it seems you lot will not be happy until there's just three of you left - three so that two can gang up on the other one.

For a game that likes to think of itself as having a "mature" audience you guys sure go out of your way to behave like a bunch of highschool jerks.

Ah, yes, as you throw out four-paragraph-rant after four-paragraph-rant about how MEAN we all are and how BOOT-HAPPY the coms are, I can really see that you don't care all that much about this! You're not having a massive public whiny tantrum because no one likes you and you're constantly being booted for being a terrible voob, you're just doing it because we're all poopy-head bullies who won't stop picking on you people! Is that about right?

Dog Sociology
Dogs can best be understood by studying their wolf ancestors. A dog's natural behavior is rooted in a pack social structure. Once you understand how this pack social structure works, you will be able to understand your dog as an individual.

A pack is a hierarchy in which each dog has a specific position. Your dog will consider you, your family and any other household pets as his pack and will view each member as having a certain position in the pack pecking order. In a wolf pack, the Alpha pair, or the dominant male and female, heads the hierarchy. Other males and females will be under the Alpha pair, with young wolves and cubs at the bottom. Each wolf is submissive to the Alpha pair and to those animals positioned in the levels above it.

This complex social structure results in strong bonding and a sense of family between the members. A wolf that is taken booted from his pack will suffer a condition known as "separation anxiety." Domestic dogs, also pack animals, can suffer a similar condition when their owners leave them alonecomms boot them. This separation anxiety frequently leads to destructive behavior such as inappropriate chewing and compulsive barkingposting.
