That's the example I should have gone with -- Overwatch is just TF3 anyway.

Time is the only limiting factor for me. And, what's the word? The ability to force myself to do something. I'm lacking willpower and constantly am tired right now

I think it's interesting that Allegiance "died" a second death on Steam not at all unlike how it died back in the early 2000's. The same issues still plague it nearly 20 years later. It has crappy training modules, a huge learning curve, matchmaking is tedious and deeply flawed, and has an intense community run by the hardcore. It's an unfortunate mix. Alleg could have/should have been a massive hit that spawned a franchise, but there's just a few critical things about it that kills it for the mainstream. Add in 20-year-old outdated graphics (gameplay is still fine, IMO) and I think that seals it's fate.

I'm 33 now (13 when the game came out!) and I'm pretty certain I'll never find a game that was as much fun as Alleg was back in its heyday. Most of that is that I was a kid with a much better imagination than I have now (and a lot of the gameplay concepts were cutting edge at the time), but part of it is Alleg was tailor made for a specific kind of gamer, and not many of those gamers seem to exist!

i don't see how anyone could consider a 20 year run, or even a 10 year run, a failure for a video game

Hear hear!

There have been multiple 10v10s+ today and still rolling. Granted there are only a few windows of opportunity game times, but it's been like that for about a decade now.

Also I don't think most people realize the amount of computer games that have come out and since been removed since 1999.

Allegiance remains available.

Good point! I suppose I'm just speaking from a standpoint of mainstream success. It's been kept alive 100% by a very small group of devotees, which is awesome, at the same time, not necessarily a sign of resounding success.

It was a success with a very small group of people, I suppose is a good way to put it. To rephrase what I said above, I think it failed to gain mass appeal for the same reasons it failed to gain mass appeal 20 years ago.

Also this thread is making me feel real old. Thanks. For any of the 60 year old retirees we played with back then, they're in their 80's now. Unbelievable.

Ha! I remember when you joined the community, you were super young. I probably was too! Now we're old men. Guess that's how it goes.
