Call for volunteers: merging Allegiance into FS2

Catch-all for all development not having a specific forum.

Yeah, we can have our development forum on this side, but we should make an official thread on the HLP side too. Would it be only to show progress and recruit people on the FS side.

I'd say it's a detail but an important one: it's not Allegiance development but Freespace development with an Allegiance theme.
Putting it under dev zone might confuse people about what it is. Also I'm not sure the Dev ZL has anything to do with this.
Putting it in its own 'zone' would make it clear to everyone that it's something different from the main Allegiance game.
Politics aside, we're just 'hosted' here and this project is between 2 communities.
Eventually you can do like HLP forums: have a distinct zone for 'hosted projects' and put it in there.

I think it will be handled the same way like the Quantus project, so the DevZL has nothing really to do with it.

I think that's the best idea is just putting a redirect forum in here, while development forum is hosted on a FS2 community site. That way it would be easier to communicate with other FS2 projects.

I can see having a forum here for Allegiance gameplay details and updates for the Alleg community with a subforum that redirects to HLP for the FS2 technical stuff and for those in this community who want to sign up and follow the project there.

kage,

Do you see any cash needs at this time or near future where it will become a "show stopper"?

After watching some FS2 on youtube, I began to see where you're going with this and I believe this could really become something. After a few more minutes of contemplation I began to imagine the arguments and community split that will happen when you make a drastic compromise from lets say particle weapons to laser weapons or by eliminating pods...etc. I think if you want to perk up the "dead" side of the community, some original aspects will have to remain intact.

Overall, I think it's a great idea and I'd be happy to be apart of it.
[15:25] <BBT_> oh, so da vinci's mona lisa isn't his work?
[15:25] <+fuh-zz> No, he simply put effort into it.
[15:25] <BBT_> are you really that retarded?

ok we got a misunderstanding here.

We all agreed to have the development forum on this side (= Allegiance community) and an intro/"progression update" topic on FS side.

now you want the other way around ?!

Ah, sorry wrong end of the stick grasped firmly on my end ;)

Although I think that a link to HLP may be useful as we here have little knowledge of the FS2 code. Also getting some interest from the community at HLP couldn't be a bad thing.

I'm sure we can always create/move to a new top level forum once the project is more mature and a sub of the dev forum is probably easier to sell to TE/TB than a whole new zone at this stage (after all, Quantas wouldn't have warranted a new zone).

This link directed me to first buy the game at GOG, then update using the installer. When I ran the installer it tried to connect to the update site, but was unable to.

The update that fails is the media pack. Just don't install that. You can install it manually later but it's quite a few files.

Want bigger games? Log on to play at the official game time: 9pmET/8pmCT/7pmMT/6pmPT every day of the week. Also Saturdays 8pm UTC.

Ah, yes. Turey's Installer is old, buggy and quite problematic as, until our friend Goober finishes to code a new one, we have many newcomers getting stuck with it.

Best way until the new installer is done is to go manual install. Follow this, and go directly to "Step One: Understanding what you need", skipping "Quick Start: Using the Online Installer".

If you need help, go to our IRC channel, you'll always find someone (including myself) to help you (#hard-light or #freespace at irc.esper.net).

EDIT: Here's a more detailed walkthrough of the manual install.
