Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Dec 13 2009, 11:40 AM) What is the point of having cool stuff you can dig up if you are interested!!! The cool stuff needs to be the first thing a new guy downloading and installing Allegiance sees.
This. The frontpage needs fixing. The reason I stuck with alleg is that I had nothing better to do, and enjoyed reading. If I didn't enjoy reading a crapload of stuff, I wouldn't be here. I did find the frontpage interesting myself, but like I said, I am more succeptible to written materials than most. I say we add a video. How about merging the original with the gameplay one? (Cut the original short, and when the story ends, cut to gameplay).
Cashto: I'll say it again, any tutorial needs to say something about how to dock and switch bases. Not a single newbie I have talked to knew this. Something about @Help would be needed in any tutorial also.

I agree and already got both. (Switching bases is described in how to be a bomber nan, and @Help is at the first "more resources" listed).

This is a pretty neat idea.

I just remembered how I got into alleg!
I was bored at work, did a google or two link from page to page ended up at the acadamy. I always read my manuals (very rare apparently) and got so excited after 4 hours of reading and reading.. that will not happen for most people... (not even from me if I wasn't trapped at work!)

I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Remember, what I say is IMO always. If I say that something sucks, it actually means "I think it sucks" OK?
Just a quick update... I'm busy at work on a new front page mock-up =) So far I'm very pleased with it. I'll post it on my free webhost when I'm done with it. Not ETA... I'm done with the layout but now I have to do graphics creation, which will take awhile if I want to make it look like it does in my head =P
BTW, does anybody have access to a .psd of Pook's "Jesus Scout" image? I think a modified version of that would make a fantastic banner for the front page. Instead of Pook, though, it'd say "Allegiance" of course. Maybe I'll PM Pook and hope he still checks his PMs.
edit:
Oh, I forgot, he turned off his PM feature. Oh well. Anybody have a copy of that image? Maybe I could try to recreate it.

Oh, hey, that's what that was. I was wondering because I stopped reading this thread but then stumbled over that in the wiki, but ended up making the exact same general suggestion, in crappier form, in the other Bacon thread. I guess now I feel silly.

Seeing as how I'm a new player (having just hopped in today), I figure this is probably the only topic I can currently provide any insight for, so let me explain what happened for me.
There's a popular website called TVTropes, it has a page for Allegiance, it is categorized as a Freeware Game. I, in my eternal hunt for games to play, most of them free, found the Allegiance page and was intrigued by the premise (RTS with human-controlled units in my perception, though I'm sure many see it as a flight sim where one guy controls the entire team's arsenal). I passed it up at first, fearing it too complicated. But, eventually, I said "what the hell" and clicked the link (as I check the Freeware Games list on TVTropes quite often, usually only downloading one or two at a time).
I immediately went to the wiki to investigate how the game works. The learning curve made me wary, and the installation process was daunting, but I'm a pretty savvy dude, so I went with it. I was greatly disheartened at the rather stringent requirements for ACS (though understanding, no every Tom, Dick, or Harry is cut out for that sort of thing), but I figured that either Cadet's do that even I can get and maintain rank 10 without too much trouble after passing it, or that I could become a decent commander on my own (as I have no talent for flight sims, I'm more of an RTS guy). So, I installed it and .NET 2.0, made my accounts, etc.
Then I played it. I started with the training missions, of course. I was killed by every AI-controlled ship I ran into without being able to kill ANY of them (the mission 4 scout ran off never to be seen again after I finally hit it, I was forced to quit the mission). Then I tried my hand at an actual game, where I was podded four times and scored little but glancing blows on my enemies (I have no clue what button the dispenser is, so I couldn't even probe, not that I had a chance to think about it before I was podded on my first attempt to do so).
That said, why am I still here? Because dammit, it's the only team-based online game I could ever hope to be good at (as a commander). That and the wiki said I'd give up, and I don't listen to robots.
Anyway, I figure that the presentation does need a lot of sprucing up, as has been said, but maybe you guys could, I dunno, maybe try to appeal to RTS fans as well as the flight sim fans? Also, try and aim for people that dig games with weird concepts, because Allegiance is certainly unique among other games. Also, another small thing that could be done is possibly linking ASGS and the forums a little more closely, but I assume that's already been discussed to death. My last idea is maybe having a highly visible notice that alerts all players that Num0=mouse control. I got lucky and one of the local luminaries informed me of that invaluable little key, but many new players may not know about it until it's too late. Sorry if this got ranty or incoherent or anything, hope it helps.
