I tried the tracert twice because of that second hop timing out.

Delete both files. Fixed.

EDIT : This will probably break a program on your system (the name of which I forget). On the other hand, it will fix Alleg, Java and God knows what else.

Also, thanks to Sgt_Baker@RT for finding the solution.

Now you've got me curious... just exactly what was the problem?

A bunch of programs fail because of this. The file named Program confuses some routines it seems. AFAIK, it borks ASGS, Java Runtimes, and Maple.

FreeBeer - DOS Legacy. At some point in accessing the Allegiance EXE, ASGS or something related converts the path from "C:/Program Files/..." to "C:/PROGRA~1/..." which promptly breaks if there is a file names Program in C.

Add MySQL to the list of stuff that breaks because of it.

That did the trick.
I can now start the game and get a games listing.

Thanks so very much. I really appreciate it.

Guess I'll have to get practicing and learning now.

Hi folks,

It would appear that at some point in the proceedings that Alleg's 'EXE Path' registry key gets converted silently into an oldskool 8 character file name, which would render it 'C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\ALLEGI~1\" etc etc etc. It would also appear that Windoze is unable to distinguish between a FOLDER called 'PROGRA~1' and a FILE called 'PROGRA~1' whilst in this silly legacy mode, when the file has no extension. Obviously the problem extends beyond alleg, and as Immz mentioned, managed to break my JavaRE, Maple, MySQL... the list goes on. Upon inspection of 'C:\Program' it appears to be an install log for a network monitoring program called 'OpManager'. I've emailed the developers of said program, however I suspect there may be more than one culprit out there.

Anyhow,

*tips hat*

B

Edit: Oh. Immz already posted this. 'yy Baker!!!

I'm fast with the edit button. (Lots of practice /ninja.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":ninja:" border="0" alt="ninja.gif" />).

Closing this down. I need to get a KB article cranking about this error. Once again, thanks Baker /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
