Raveen wrote:QUOTE (Raveen @ Aug 13 2012, 09:10 AM) A more generic point but one that bugs me. How come Creationists (who, let's not forget, think that something can only possibly true if it is in line with their particular interpretation of their holy book) have started using "close minded" to describe the scientists and rationalists who actually bother to argue with them. That's right, the people who base their views on evidence and are willing to change their views if new evidence comes to light are the ones with closed minds.

Could we not claim this particular phrase back from the Creationists?
In my experience (This is just my view, not some scientific group study) of dealing with Fundamentalist Christians (The majority of Canada is either Christian or non-religious, with Islam, Judaism, Sikh, and Baha'i being minorities), the idea of "faith" is "opening your mind to God/Yahweh". I'm just paraphrasing what a Fundamentalist had told me when discussing the actual topic of closed-mindedness. But remember: The idea of Yahweh to the Fundamentalist is that it's a self-evident fact. They don't need to prove it because the proof is already in front of you.

In that rejection of this faith, non-believers are "closing their minds". As a skeptic, I face accusations similar to being called "closed minded" in rejecting claims abroad such as wild stories and claims made without evidence. It's just packaged and worded differently. Skepticism and closed-mindedness are commonly mixed up. Closed-mindedness is the flat out rejection of claims or new ideas, while skepticism is simply having doubt in the truth of a claim or new idea. Since most skeptical atheists have, for the most part, come to the conclusion of rejecting the claims made by (I don't like to use this as a broad label for every group, but it fits in this case) religion, the believer ignores the skepticism in a person who has come to this conclusion through logic and reason rather than flat out rejection without any investigation.

If you read the Bible, you could easily point out a few quotes that clearly contribute to ignorance today's Christian Fundamentalism.

Yeah... Frankly, I don't care too much about what you believe in as long as you don't try to pass it off as fact without evidence. Fundamentalists can be perfectly reasonable people UNTIL they try to debate using faith rather than evidence.

I tend to stay away from bull@#(!. Last time I tried that stuff, I almost got stuck in a 6 year contract on a Hebrew slave.

Do you mean exclusively non-idiot, or are you implying that they are all idiots?
