I saw a mention of the Beta on an internal MS Beta site, applied and was sent the CD in fall of 1999.

I was on hard times, just getting off of a particularly riveting physics lecture about nothing in particular. I knew I would need a good glass of cognac when I came home, and it knew it was waiting for me. On my way home I passed by the flower shop where the flower girl was sorting the flowers alphabetically by color. I struck up a semimeaningful conversation in my usual tone about the interesting characterstics of nothing that was interesting. Fresh off my failure with the flower girl, I returned home to be greeted by the usual suspects, a variety of Roleplaying Games and First Person shooters that would be my company for the night. The first sip of cognac went down as smooth as the virtual bullets going through the heads of my virtual enemies. It wasn't until my fifth glass that the cognac started to sour and I had to switch to my drink of choice, Captain Morgan. It was through Captain Morgan that I found great things that night. It led me to a state of zen, which is to say passed out, and when I woke up there remained only one icon on my desktop, Allegiance. I slammed the rest of my Morgan from the previous night and got to work.

I got onto the public beta in 1999 via betazine.com (now defunct). What a great site that was!

TVTropes actually led me here. Upon looking for where Joker's comment in ME1 about how it takes skill to bank a ship in a vacuum popped up I was led to "Space Friction," then to Allegiance. From there, I got curious and then I began my own little space opera journey the day after I installed it.
