/preamble

I was at my friend's house today. He's trying to get me to play WoW (again) with him. I'm trying to get him to play Alleg with me.
He starts up WoW, to show me his char and such. The login screen music comes up, which is all epic and gets me pumped up to play, and even the little background video is epic as hell. He logs in and shows me his char, showing me all his cool gears and @#(!.

I was convinced to play (again) when I heard the login music.

I install Alleg on his comp, make him an account, log him in. No intro video/music, nothing eye-catching or entertaining. We sit in the lobby for awhile while the teams juggle commanders in between games. I try to explain what's going on and why he shouldn't lose interest. He sits on a team for awhile before the game launches. Game finally launches, my friend flies out in a scout, while I explain to him how to find alephs. He gets 3 sectors away from home, gets podded by fwiffo, then floats home for like 6 minutes, then logs out.

Fortunately my friend ALWAYS eventually ends up getting addicted to the same games I am.

/end preamble

I dunno how I'm going to convince him it's not boring as hell.
It's thoroughly entertaining to me because I'm wrapped up in the politics and drama.
but really....god this game looks boring.

and no offense to all the people who volunteer their time and money to keep this game going, but honestly

LESS INFORMATION, MORE PRESENTATION

The more work you all put into this , the more overwhelming+boring it looks to anyone who isn't already into the game.

Also I'm wondering how come we use Teamspeak instead of Ventrilo.

Every game I've played has used Ventrilo, except Allegiance and Runescape.
I think new players would be alot more inclined to "jump on vent" with us than to download and run some teamspeaky thing that nobody uses except 12 year olds for free mmorpgs. and god knows we don't need any more of those in the community.

We cannot embed Youtube on the wiki, sorry.

Vent has a lot more options for making everyone easier to hear than TS does.

And of course somebody is going to respond with "because we can use teamspeak overlay"

well, you should know people's voices anyway

and if you don't, it'll be really easy if we use ventrilo
people are a million times more identifiable on ventrilo

Ventrilo's business model sucks donkey balls.

If you really want better quality TS go Mumble.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The whole point of a wiki is to focus on content, not presentation.

I take it half of this thread is volounteering to get the CSS for the wiki and make a new Mediawiki skin? Congratulations! You can download the software this very second and get styling!

Don't want that? Go take a look at our templates and make them sexier!

Don't want that? Go make sexy engaging videos of Allegiance already! (And please don't go too crazy with Windows Movie Maker.)

Don't want that? Go snap sexy pictures to decorate our pages with!

Don't want that? Improve the existing wall'o texts or improve Cashto's!

Stop discussing what somebody should do and get doing it.

Bad, bad, bad Badp.

I would not want to change anything about the CSS, I think the current setup is excellent!! & I really mean it!!!!!!!!!

Ok now we know that there are limitations on embedding stuff....... No biggie we can work with it. May I add one suggestion re the TS debate. Please can those @Help peeps also sport that tag whilst on TS?...Hopefully the reasons are obvious. We want a friendly copper on every street corner who is the official voice of Alleg for all those who looking for help.

Yes, presentation is everything. Most people seem to have forgotten that. No wonder Allegiance is such an exclusive club. We've made the game look as dry and boring as a bad powerpoint presentation.
refill wrote:QUOTE (refill @ Dec 13 2009, 09:51 AM) Ok Bacon. But I must add, I just cannot see any reason to change the frontpage, perhaps there need to be less text on it, but that is about it. Can't the original video be placed onto the wiki now that there is a HD version that is available on Youtube.
No no no no. That will not help at all.

What is the point of having cool stuff you can dig up if you are interested!!! The cool stuff needs to be the first thing a new guy downloading and installing Allegiance sees.

Put the music back into the game right now. Put the intro video back in, and make TigerEye's Allegiance promo a part of the www.freeallegiance.org page. Also fix the $#@!ing default key bindings! It seems that half what I'm doing under the @HELP tag is apologising for the atrocious default bindings and telling the new guys how to bind their controls.

This is close to the worst possible way to present an awesome game. You'd think we are total geeks completely separated from the real world. The decisions done to strip down the game seem designed to keep anybody anybody who doesn't already know Allegiance rocks the hell away.

$#@!!
