Of course not. Commanders never win any games; however, people like you certainly lose them

Reading this thread makes me want to boot people. Time to command again.

having played this game for a little while (~1.5 yrs), i have to say that MrChaos touches on some very good points. the learning curve is indeed pretty steep and the game isn't exactly conducive to one's own improvement since due to the inherent complexities of a multiplayer teamwork game, its hard to determine exactly the actions that led to a defeat and to take corrective action in the next game.

there needs to be an "observer" mode for people not participating in the game so they can sit and watch how more experienced players play and try to emulate them. maybe even a way to record a game and replay it back from different vantage points to showcase examples of things like:

how to defend miners
how to probe
how to nan
how to bomb

these things are great on paper and the cadet program is awesome, but to see these things in action would be invaluable.

maybe vets can use fraps and upload the videos as a starter. that would be a great way to increase the competitiveness of the general population.

Honestly fwiffo the best way to do this is to pick a vet and follow him around, assisting him in everything he does. If you happen to mount a nan and combat nan him I guarantee he will love you long time.

i've been trying this but it's a lot harder in practice. it's completely different watching someone play from your ship vs watching their screen as they play. often times, i have difficulties to even keep the vet in front of me so i can see what they are doing while at the same time trying to be useful.

take counterstrike as an example. at your option, you can move around as a "ghost" and watch how others play from their point of view. you can see exactly where they aim to achieve headshots. same thing with starcraft. if a player comes up with a particularly effective new strategy, the next thing other players want to do is to capture it in a replay to deconstruct/analyze it and come up with counters. there's no such counterpart for allegiance. i feel that new players are all reinventing the wheel in their own way through repetitive reinforcement of their own bad habits with little hope of improvement with each game.

A playback option would be usefull indeed. Not only for the noobs, but also to analyse squad games and zone games and for comanders to improve their strategy.
Best way to do this would probably be by capturing the F3 view of each sector.

Another thing you can do is ask to observe squad games. Most squads will let cadets just sit in base and watch everything from F3.

This is very good advice.

I only got to sit in one SG during cadet, but I did observe a 2 hour PK vs. XT match (from PK side), so that was very useful.

Some people record games with FRAPS, and I've seen some discussion on trying to make a collection of training videos based on those things. Another excellent and useful project that.

blink.gif i follow someones command and you boot me off ?
who did that ?
i wonder why?
sounds like grump y gamers

my opinion is maybe the booting be recorded under whomever is commander at the time. It is such a powerful ACTION it should be measured somehow in game so that other players are aware of some gamers weak attempts at commanding. ie if i knew a commander always did booting from game i probably would not play in his team.

this would keep away newbies from that particular game. who wants to be booted ?

who booted me?

You don't know who booted you?

Damn, speaks a lot for your situational awareness doesn't it?

Also, necro much?

You also didn't follow our advice in the helpline. If you PM BlackViper with the time and server of the incident, he'll be able to take action.

Whining on the forums only attracts flames and won't get you any sympathy.
