PS: it's usually better to ping an IP from someone in the same rack and with the same service plan as your server will be, depending on their infrastructure it could make a difference. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'd recommend looking into servers from the uk.Grimmwolf_GB wrote:QUOTE (Grimmwolf_GB @ Oct 28 2006, 10:31 AM) Thank you for posting your pings... It does not really look that good. 170 is not good enough. We will have to look for a different server, I guess.
(Afaik almost every connection from US-Europe passes the backbones in London)
P.S.:
I might be wrong, someone pipe up if it is the case /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

there are some from other countries nowadays i think, but the UK still has by far the most and best.
also i would get an even better ping in the UK, so i recommend it!
btw if you care, my ping to www.proserve.nl is 22, the other one was 36.
if you get it to 10, ill give you a prize!

UK would be a good place but......... UK providers are notorious for oversubscribing their lines. Generally speaking though UK is a place where all europeans get reasonable ping times, but not great ones. For the rest of europe usually some countries get great pings <40 and others >100 pings but if you base your server in the UK all of them get say 80 ping.
Probably we'd all be better off renting a server in a New Jersey or UK datacenter because then we can all have reasonable ping times. For a really low ping euro server we'd have to put up a poll to see which peeps are from what countries because it depends on the physical network between those countries and peering agreements between different exchanges/providers on what location will be best for hosting an ueber EU server. For datacentres in the same city you can get ping times to a 3rd world country like ... say Slovakia /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> that are between 30 and 100. It all depends on whether the server you rent is in a location that has an agreement with a company that connects directly to slovakia or not. (usually the cheap ass providers have a limited set of peering agreements via their backbone and thus you might be out of luck if you are from a region which they don't support). Sadly for IW Portugal is also a country that usually has very variable ping times depending on which datacenter/country you use.
