It depends very much on how uniform you think the unit in question should be before you'd consider it united.
Personally I don't think unity is required or even desirable. I would gladly settle for a common respect for the truth, frankly. You can't argue with someone who refuses to acknowledge relevant facts and who keeps a store of made-up 'alternative facts' to back up his/her views.
There's enough to disagree about without resorting to falsehoods.
The trouble with America is that you guys have made your party affiliation part of your cultural identity. If I attack your political views it's like I'm attacking your heritage, like I'm taking a dump on your parents' grave.
It's stupid and dangerous.

Agreed. It manifests itself into shouting down anyone who disagrees with you or parts from their narrative or mapping a caricature of an opponent onto the entire body of people without nuance.

No you're right Alaskan, what I should really be doing is compromising with the people who say transfolk don't have human rights. What I should really be doing is compromising with the people who insist that Gillum is a criminal because of the color of his skin. What I should really be doing is compromising with the people who tell me that "Barrack Hussein Obama is a KENYAN TRAITOR."
Mainstream republicanism is all kinds of awful and if you don't want to see that no one can make you, but don't expect me to react to your crocodile tears about how unfortunate it is that your dad who voted for Donald Trump got called a racist.

Prejudices and bigotry are everywhere, yes, but the idea that people can't be unified because of their diversity is simply ridiculous.
