Are the weapons well balanced? Or do the experienced players all laser boat?

most of the weapons seem pretty much standard for mechwarrior and behave about as you'd expect
it's just the gameplay is like world of tanks - idiots rush forward in a map and die, smarter dudes hang back and wait/camp, and so on
steiner doctrine of "throw more assault mechs at the problem" seems to be the way to go

More 100ton Mechs always fixes a problem.

The NDA is pretty damn strict. Can't really say anything about the game without being in violation of it
Beta is still pretty early, and it's very heavy on the hardware. I suspect my graphics card is the bottleneck for me.
Lasers are time-on-target damage, which is interesting. LRMs are handled well. The gameplay feels like a very early version of World of Tanks, except with mecha. I suspect it will turn into a good game, if given enough time. If they run out of money and have to release it too early... not so much.
Currently there isn't really any balancing in the teams, so Virulence's comment about assault mechs is unfortunately pretty much spot on. There is a good suggestion about a max 600 ton drop weight, meaning that on a full 12 person team the average mech weight would be 50 tons.

Its also important to note that their idea of a scout mech isnt fully realized yet. Really theres just a lot of stuff in the game that is NYI, so to say that it will end up as "atlassesses rule the world" may be a premature.

yeah there's a ton of work they need to do with the game but right now it's not very interesting
i haven't played it that much because planetside 2 is just so much more entertaining

Word.
Atlases in fact do not rule the world. I have killed a few by having somebody spot it with a scout, and just raining down LRMs from my catapult that's nearly a kilometer away.
Solarflux@RT does it better though. He runs behind an Atlas in his Jenner, and just whittles it down with lasers as it futilely tries to turn and point some weapons at the Jenner.

An Atlas by itself can be taken care of, a group of 4~8 together are a bad day
