In all honesty I can't remember, except that everyone played on the newbie servers and newbs vs world was something that a lot of vets (and a sad number of noobs) thought was a good idea.

The newbie servers were the best single part of my experience as a a newcomer to Allegiance.
They were always empty for me. So I just had little sparring matches with my friends. (Each and every one of em either doesn't like the game, thinks it has a virus, or is afraid of the main)
A hero is not one who never falls, but one who gets up again and again, NEVER losing sight of one's dream!

First played on the newbie servers (there were enough newbies at the time to have 5v5 games regularly, since Alleg went shared-source). In between I did read some material but since there was no Cadet or AFS, I could only read the faction pages on the precursor of Academy.
Never got booted untill Sheff `decided` to hand over command to some fake newb who in turn went on a booting spree.
