It's just a simple question of more people leaving than joining. The "joining" part is simple; this game doesn't get a whole lot of exposure, and both the community and the learning curve are unfriendly to newbies by nature. The marketing efforts and AFS should fix this to a reasonable extent. The "leaving" part is also very simple; occasionally someone gets banned, but more often people just don't have the time to play anymore, and thus rarely appear on the leaderboard even if they're here in spirit.

Wrong, the learning curve and community are unfriendly to noobs and 90% of gamers are noobs if playing pub l4d games is anything to go by.

I think the problems are, and I know I may be out of line, being fairly new. But I'll toss my 4 half-pennies in.
The forums and game aren't connected. You need to create a callsign AND a forum ID. Which is protection, yes. But still, you deny access to all forums (save for news) if you aren't a member. Meaning the new guys log in, or attempt to, and do 1 of the following.
- Their anti-virus software says "No" and they leave it at that
- They disable anti-virus software and get in. Only to discover their graphics card doesn't support it.
- They log in, no issues, get into a game after doing training missions and spend 20000 hrs in a pod. Rounded down from 24999.999999999
- They log in, realize they have issues, go to the forums and seek help.
Maybe if you had a first timer thingie where it said "Go here for help" (I don't remember seeing one) then it'd help people see that they're not gonna be the bee's knees for a good while.
"You can fly for a dozen nice comms but once you run into the mean one it's all over"
I'll be honest with you, when a comm says a newbie cost their team the game, it hurts. It's happened twice to me so far. Hopefully that'll be it. I'm a little enamored by the fact that this game requires SKILL to play and not LVLS. That's why Elzam von Branstein is here to stay. Not everyone is like that and when you get scolded by your other 14 teammates for losing the game, you feel like quitting. If the AFS thing works and becomes year round, that'd be pretty sweet. (Just gotta get new guys to do AFS)
I guess that's everything I got.

any commander that says a newbie cost their team the game is completely retarded. having too many can lose, or in the rare case of fake ones who disrupt the game purposefully by sabatoging different things
@ cam, ints are not the easiest craft to use. how could you even think that without your head exploding

Which one is easiest?

Sushi wrote:QUOTE (Sushi @ Dec 5 2009, 05:25 PM) But, since R5 is out and works great for me, I think I'll go celebrate right now by trying to remember which end of an int I'm supposed to shoot out of.
Turns out remembering how to fly an int wasn't a problem. I did, however, manage to rip (eyed) to an assault ship because I forgot that hitting ripcord in the same sector would take me right back to it. As a fighter streaked towards me, I ripcorded again in panic... right back to the assault ship again.
And then I voluntarily booted myself.

When I joined alleg there were 1100 on the leaderboard
I played in newbie side games for a good month before joining the main servers. During this time I spent every waking moment reading the academy over and over and thus got into cdt.
It was weird for me to see that newbie games were no longer going on a while back.

none are easy, thats the point. however scouts are probably the easier of them all.
all ships require situtational awareness to benefit your team, for example
Sfs and scouts are almost entirely reliant on situational awareness and game knowledge. Where to drop a probe, where is the miner d, can i sneak in past these people, etc. Lrms, util, and sniper all forgo the need to aim, either through lead inds or missle lock, same for prox. nan takes a bit to aim but you generally are pretty close and dont need to dodge fire coming back from your target.
Figs depend on a mix of situational awareness, game knowledge, and skill, because their gat fire does take skill to aim. however most their damage is done with missles and is more dependent on situational awareness in a dogfight to determine where and when to lay mp to keep the enemy at range while you kill them with stuff that locks on (and gats, but hardly anyone can aim at max gat range anyway).
Ints used to be the king of the battlefield because they rely on lots of everything. Knowledge of the game as far as sneaking to enemy miners, when to target nans v just spiking, hunting sfs, etc. Situational awareness to a great extent to know when to run, find enemy nans (because against most targets you will need to kill them first) etc. Skill most of all because your entire damage is done through putting minigun fire on target. Thats why everyone qqs when people who can aim are on the same team.
anyway making figs the most powerful ship out there lessens the gap skill brings to the fight and dumbs the game down like cod4 did to fps. give everyone noob tubes and nobody need worry about how muhc they suck ass at aiming

LOL?!? Since when is situational awareness not a skill, and since when is boosting 2 sectors and shooting things difficult?
Our opinions on this subject seem to differ.
