I was just trying to show everyone how trivial this discussion is. People could be offended by expert or veteran too just because the words look the way they do. Any word can be used derogatorily depending on the context or even just the inflection of the voice:

"GREAT job, Einstein" or "Great job, EINSTEIN:" first one Einstein is used as a compliment, while the second is sarcastic impling the opposite of Einstein.

Voob can imply simply the middle-ground between Vet/Noob or someone could think it means they're a crappy vet (too nooby to be a vet).

I'm indifferent to words, people try to insult and I just roll my eyes at them. This may not be the case for everyone. It all comes back to who controls this one little text file; which admin(s) can or cannot change it. The admins will have to duke it out amongst themselves.

That was a pretty poor way of communicating it.

I find that the "write your electronic correspondance and wait 24 hours before re-reading, revising, and submitting it" solution works well for heated issues.

...voob has always been used here as a personal insult, worse to be a voob than a noob here. So, at best it's an annoyance, at worst, it's really, really annoying.

In my opinion, there's actually nothing wrong with muppet, I kind of like that... except that it would make rank names no different than team names. Sometimes when a com names his/her team, the name is fine, sometimes it's funny, sometimes stupid. But sometimes it's really offensive. Why play those kind of word games with ranks? Especially, if on a given night, a ranking name that is kind of funny turns into a ranking name that is really nasty?

Seems like that part should be standardized.

it's not a trivial discussion. Most ppl who aren't familiar with the community will take noob and voob as an insult and if we're really trying to grow the community then it's the perceptions of the as-of-yet not playing ppl that we need to consider.

While I agree that it depends on the offended one whether it is perceived as an 'insult' or not, I would not agree that it is a choice. (as you 'feel' insulted before you really begin thinking about it)

A very important aspect where I agree with Monkage is the contemporary usage of the problematic word in the respective culture. The more often the word is used in a non-positive way, the easier it is for someone to 'feel' insulted.
Thus it is best to try to avoid these words and try to use words with positive (or at least neutral) connotations.

Currently Voob and Noob is often used in a negative way in this community. Thus these words should be avoided, or used in a _clear_ positive context to better the image of the words :-)
