Star Wars Post-Watching Thread
See the thing is I don't mind that the old characters aren't relevant to the story. What I mind is that the story is very confusing, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and the new characters are relatively unknown quantities after I just spent 2 hours watching them run in circles vaguely trying to accomplish goals.

Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.

Yeah, I agree that it would be fine if done right.phoenix1 wrote:QUOTE (phoenix1 @ Dec 23 2015, 12:44 PM) See the thing is I don't mind that the old characters aren't relevant to the story. next things they will show luke run on top of the water and fly barely above bamboo trees..
star war is nothing more than a Chinese movies mark up for westerner..
star war point out that socialist are alive and well in the future and republic are just a freedom fighters
good vs evil if good won people continues buying the tickets
Nix1 can you put the mask back on ? I know han ask you to take the mask off.

Just saw it last night with the wife and kids.
* Wife will openly admit to enjoying the prequels and likes Jar Jar. (I still love her. Our relationship was sorely tested, and was made stronger by this significant challenge).
* Oldest daughter attempted to lay on me to fall asleep right after they went into the cantina (age - 14), however perked up after they left the cantina. All the kids enjoyed the movie (10/12/14).
* Friend and two kids also liked the movie (Ages: 10/17)
I had one monster complaint above the fact that they trotted out another death star (seriously?).
LEIA: Han, you can't go. You know he'll be there.
HAN: I have to confront him Leia. I've been running from this for too long. It's cost me so much. It's cost us so much.
LEIA: I can't lose you too. Even now, after all of this. Please, Han...
HAN: There's no other way. Only the Falcon has (TECH BABBLE).
C3PO: Sir, the Star Killer will be in position in 30 minutes! We're doomed!
* HUGS *
DRAMATIC PULL BACK ON FALCON LEAVING
Didja see what I did there?? Keep that secret with a little heavy handed foreshadowing! We don't need to know Kal is Han and Leia's son until movie 2, or even three when Rey has the show down, and Leia gives her the final pep talk about how dangerous Kylo is. Come on, build that dramatic tension people!
I was dissapoint.
Also, Kylo's mane sure fit nice in that helmet. When he pulls it off for Han, it's in perfect condition, with no helmet head at all. WTF.
Here's how I would have chained these events:
Move setting to Bespin.
Rey is part of indentured mining team that works on cloud city's extractor lines.
She finds luke's hand and saber while working on extractor ends.
The artifact is priceless due to it's history. She attempts to sell it. To Kylo, who's gone nuts for EP 4-6 memorbilia (see Vader's mask).
Before the deal can go down, she has the force flashback.
When she tries back out of the deal because she wants to find out more about the force (needs to find luke), that sets her on her journey.
Kylo sics Phasma + goon squad on her. They shoot up the Mining crew looking for her.
Fin has ephiphany
They flee to Jaku on junk shipment from Bespin
Land on Jaku, try to link up with Resistance
Kylo shows up with goon sqaud, big fight
Escape in the Falcon, yay!
Meet up with Han
etc...
Don't even need a Macguffin the size of a death star to pull this off. Keeping it on a smaller scale gives all the characters a lot more opportunity to bounce off of each other and you know... build up?
You know, it could have been so much better with a little more plausability and tension building...
Also, too many Lost cast cameos, I was absolutley distracted when Greg Grundberg showed up. "There's Greg Grundberg... Man, I really liked Lost... Wait, what are they doing?"
Anyway... C+ is quite fair.. Easily could have waiting for it to drop on Netflix... Instant...

I want to see it again because there was a lot I liked even though the overall experience left me cold.
For the record I like the prequels in spite of their manifest problems. And think the prequels cast a shadow here because what they did wrong, TFA does right. The casting and acting in TFA was excellent and the script was good too, showing exactly what Lawrence Kasdan brought to the OT.
Unfortunately a lot of what the prequels did right, the imagination, overall story and generally providing the audience with something new and potentially interesting (if poorly executed), TFA fails to do. Whilst Phantom Menace is laughed at for it's political angle, at least it has one. In TFA I have no idea how the Empire, the Rebellion, the Republic, the First Order and the Resistance relate to each other. Are the Resistance part of the New Republic or not? Where are the First Order operating if the Republic exists? Which planets got blown up by the Death Star and why should I care? At least in ANH we had Obi-Wan explaining to us why the destruction of Alderaan was a terrible thing.
Like I say, I'd like to see it again because I really liked all the characters (well, except Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader CGI) and there were some nice touches such as seeing Stormtroopers as an effective military force. The space battles were OK, I liked the escape from the Star Destroyer more than the rehash of the trench run but that was fine too.

As far as I can tell, the First Order is a remnant of old Imperial power. What's difficult to fathom is the following:
1) Why is Lord Voldemort in charge of the First Order?
2) Where are the other remnants of Imperial power?
3) Why are they called "The First Order" except for trying to harken back to "Third Reich"? (Hint: Third Reich makes sense, "First Order" doesn't, they should at the very least be "Second Order")
4) Why is the Republic so utterly powerless in the face of a devastating terrorist attack? I would assume the Republic wouldn't be dumb enough to keep its fleets parked on major planets... so their fleet must still be around.

Thanks P1, I'll never be able to watch this again without giggling when ever CGI villain #1 appears. Gawd, they didn't even mention him in the opening crawler... Yet another good story opportunity wasted.phoenix1 wrote:QUOTE (phoenix1 @ Jan 4 2016, 04:27 PM) 1) Why is Lord Voldemort in charge of the First Order?
QUOTE Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen
from the ashes of the Empire
and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi,
has been destroyed.
With the support of the REPUBLIC,
General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE.
She is desperate to find her
brother Luke and gain his
help in restoring peace and
justice to the galaxy.
Leia has sent her most daring
pilot on a secret mission
to Jakku, where an old ally
has discovered a clue to
Luke’s whereabouts . . . .[/quote]
pffft... how about:
Luke Skywalker is in hiding.
He has been betrayed by
the FIRST ORDER,
sworn not to rest until
Skywalker, the last Jedi,
has been destroyed.
With the support of the REPUBLIC,
General Leia Organa leads RED SQUADRON
on a desperate quest to find her
brother Luke and to aid him
in restoring peace and
justice to the galaxy.
Leia has sent her most daring
pilot on a secret mission
to Jakku, where an old ally
has discovered a clue to
Luke’s whereabouts . . . .
Skeeeeeeeeeeee-BAM!!! Ship it!!!
You don't resist when you are the government... yeeechhh...

And if only imperial stormtroopers are so precise, why can't they hit anything?
The only real fundamental flaw was that the story was just a retread of episode IV. Down to the cantina scene. But at least it had a plot. And relatable characters. And believable dialog. To say TFA was worse than the prequels, is to forget just how atrocious the prequels were on all three of those levels.
The rest is just nitpicking IMO. If one is willing to set aside their willing suspension of disbelief, the same sort of holes could be poked all over the well-loved original trilogy too.
I understood the relationship between the Republic and the Resistance to be akin to the relationship between the Allies and the French Resistance (i.e., the Republic didn't have full control of the galaxy after the defeat of the Empire, and the Resistance was that faction fighting against the remnants of the Empire where the Republic was unwilling or unable to commit resources). Rather glad they didn't go to Episode I levels of explaining the nuances of taxation of trade routes blah blah blah, as the relationship between the Republic and the Resistance was, in the grand scheme of things, rather unimportant.
My preferred fan theory about Kylo Ren was that he expected his powers to grow after killing Han Solo, but instead the psychic trauma of killing his own father disrupted his control over the Force, thus making it possible for him to be ambushed by Chewie, which further weakened his concentration, which turned what would have been an simple force-choke rag-doll curbstomp into a still pretty one-sided battle with Finn, with the exception of one very lucky strike. Woulda been nice if all that had been explicit in the movie but oh well.
Captain Phasma was supposed to be a badass? Sorry, I didn't get the memo.
I'm pretty sure the big reveal about Snoke in Ep. 8 is that he's Yoda-sized in real life.
Finn is not force sensitive in the slightest.

Yeah, which is why they really aren't good movies. I'm personally just as critical of them. But at least they were original.cashto wrote:QUOTE (cashto @ Jan 4 2016, 09:29 PM) If one is willing to set aside their willing suspension of disbelief, the same sort of holes could be poked all over the well-loved original trilogy too.
