No evidence necessary? Must be nice to be you.

I feel sorry for the kids. It's safe to bet they won't sleep very well tonight.

It's very sad and my heart goes out to all the victims families and friends.

I'm still more afraid of cars than being in schools or movie theatres

i found these charts interesting:

Where's the evidence that you didn't choose to be gay
no evidence necessary?
must be nice to be you

anyone with a reasonably high IQ can easily determine the causes of human acts and behavior
humans are simple creatures

acts of violence/crime are and always have been directly associated with the economy/poverty

As it happens, I actually have something that may be relevant.

People are very quick to say things like "it's not the guns, crazy people will find a way. They'll use a knife or a club or something." And that is absolutely true for the latter part... lack of guns doesn't mean crazy people don't get crazy... but do check out that happened in China at the same time.

Mass School Stabbing in China.

Nasty as it is, observe that instead of nearly 30 people dead, what we have is a score of people wounded. The reason firearms revolutionised warfare is that they are so very efficient in killing. This nutter in China couldn't get a gun, and as a result his victims lived.

Putting in social safety nets and mental health care is what lowers the incidence of things like this, and it's of course the right thing to do. That will help. Problem is though that humans aren't really very stable and trustworthy. People will break down and flip out, and to say that the ready availability of recreational or "self defense" firearms doesn't make the place more unsafe is moral cowardice.

Horrifying coincidence that two such events could happen on the same day. Your point to the contrast in fatalities is well observed.

We can only hope Obama and Congress take the necessary action. Arguments against stricter gun control should hold no value in the face of so many tragedies.

We should do what Australia did in '96 after the Port Arthur massacre and just let the govt buy our guns back. It worked for them.

I'm not comparing Australia and the U.S... I'm just saying... it is about time for something to be done about all the massacres happening here these days.
