FYI MotD is a simple http request. So you shouldn't have to look at your router yet.

Since you can open cfg file, this sounds even more weird...

Have you tried a fresh install?

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

Yeah, tmc, you seem to be able to access websites ;) , and that's basically what MotD is. It uses the very same port (80) as all www stuff you browse.
About the only thing I can think of, that would cause such behavior is explicit port 80 block rule to Allegiance.exe. Maybe some really odd port forwarding rule too, but that's doubtful.

Could you confirm, that your AVG is called exactly "AVG Anti-Virus Free" and provide exact version of it (both can be found in Help->About, Program tab)?

For the sake of argument, after you uninstall - try rebooting and connecting to alleg. before reinstalling.

If you can connect when the AV is removed - you've identified the issue.

You can try that, but unless something went really really bonkers with it, it's not it - I have the very same one installed on this machine and it doesn't interfere with Alleg.

This may be a long shot, but on my win2k3 server if the "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" service is not started then allegiance will not show the MOTD, and will not connect to the lobby. This is tied into something with DPlay which is as far as I traced it at the time until I figured out that the ICS server was disabled and blocking the rest of the show. Try checking to see if that service is started on your machine.

Also, if the MOTD is coming down correctly, you should see the file timestamp get updated in your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Allegiance\Artwork\publicmessageoftheday.mdl after you launch alleg. If you see it updating the timestamp then it's probably downloading ok.

This will also happen if the volume Alleg is on is out of disk space.

AG doesn't seem to be the problem; it's now reinstalled at version 10.0.1153
Windows Firewall / ICS service has always been running.
Volume on which alleg is on has tons of space

publicmessageoftheday.mdl is timestamped 4/11/2010

Try renaming publicmessageoftheday.mdl and see if a new one comes down.
