I hate being on Command Wing because of all the giant red "SOANDSO HAS FOUND A HELIUM ASTEROID IN SUCH AND SUCH SECTOR"
"ENEMY BOMBER SIGHTED IN BLAH"
Same difference to me if you change it from me having to change Attack -> Echo to Command -> Echo.
QUOTE But I thought the point of attack wing was to hide that information, so its just making attack wing one more chat group like charlie/delta/echo.[/quote]
Charlie/delta/echo do NOT function the same as Attack.
Default Wing = Command

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
I think he was suggesting changing attack to function like them.
If you're a good enough player you know where cons are/should/will be going anyway without having to see the order. The comm usually announces where the con is going if they want D on it. Some like attack wing the way it is, and would want something that functions the same as it if it were changed.

The reason the default was changed in the first place was because new players were missing almost all commander orders (moreso than they do now).
Default chat size is only 5 lines.
It was decided that since new players were tending to find constructor/miner ordering more confusing than helpful that it would be taken off of default.

Hmm, so how about echo wing default then? Or Command default and expanding the chat to 10-lines a-la CortUI, but making this the default setting?
Also, I'm unfamiliar with the alleg codebase. Can anyone point me in the right direction or should I just do a search of the whole thing for "delta" or "wing"?

There are, I believe, three non-command wings that currently have constructor spam on them:
Charlie, Delta, and Echo
So using any wing other than "command" that already gets constructor/miner info is exactly the same as using the command wing UNLESS someone else is already on that wing and chatting via it WITH ONE DISTINCTION:
The command wing is the ONLY ONE that receives notifications about objects found or spotted. ( "Enemy bomber sighted in Titty Baby". "Bard has discovered an He Rock in the ass-end of Sri Metsa so far out that only n00bs should be flying in circles there")
Charlie, Delta and Echo do not.
Honestly, I'm really curious as to why you want to make this change because when I started playing, I seem to recall everything defaulting to "command" until R1 or R2.
It *was* changed...to the way it is now...(I think. This would have been 2006, so my memory is kinda rusty)
I don't think it should have been changed from command to attack. Yes it gives less for the newbies to read but honestly most times you see people telling newbies to go on command wing which is perfectly fine, it's only the odd constructor order most of the times and if that is information overload for the newbies then maybe this isn't the game for them.LANS wrote:QUOTE (LANS @ Jun 9 2010, 03:00 PM) I offered to make this change because a f ew people asked for it. If it was in fact changed from comman to attack, then I won't touch it.
I think the issue is that chat lines are limited. There's no point in yelling "THEY'RE COMING TO ATTACK OUR MINERS, D MINERS" if it immediately gets pushed off the chat by four lines of "Jimen@XT(.MinerXXX) goto Garrison" and a couple of con orders - anyone who knows how to switch to command wing likely has the situational awareness to notice the rush or realize I just ordered all my miners to base, but a newbie who knows how to nan but doesn't look at the minimap every ten seconds will end up sitting around being useless. I spam the hell out of the chat whenever I want anyone going anywhere anyway, since nobody actually pays attention to miner/con orders; I don't think I'd notice a significant difference in pilot performance even if everyone was FORCED to stay on attack wing.
