just so you know
my keymap wrote:W - forward thrust

D - right thrust
R - up thrust
F - down thrust
i NEVER fly with the throttle set to anything other than zero, i only ever use those keys for moving (along with tab / middle button for boosing and q,e for rolling)
you simply don't get enough control of your ship using the throttle.

I like using the throttle whenever Im going somewhere and theres nothing happeneing (ie. defending a bomber, con, miner when nothings attacking it). However, Im trying to get away from using the throttle when there is stuff going on (ie. being shot at). My movement controls are:
w, a, s, d: sidethrust up, left, down, right
r, f: throttle up, down
q, e: roll left, right
tab: thrust forward
space: thrust backwards
middle mouse: boost
Personally I like having forward and backwards mapped to tab and space because it leaves my other three fingers open for things like side thrusting, targeting, and dropping chaff/mines (x and shift-x). This layout also works if you map boost to tab, but you get that annoying out of fuel warning every time you press tab and you have no more fuel.
Okay, so the default configuration sucks, and the sample config the academy offers still uses the arrow keys. I'd like to start off playing the game with a decent setup.
I'm necroposting, but I wish to clarify this important point.
The Academy control map does keep the arrows for pitch and yaw, but that is only because they are not erased. The arrows are not remapped to something else. However, the controls provided by the Academy clearly state that any and all flight is to be done with the mouse or joystick, never with the arrows. No remapping is required for flight with the mouse, so it is not included in the inputmap1.mdl file.
