Bacon,

The Admins don't HAVE to act on it... but seeing as how one side is going to be pissed off no matter what... /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
Personally -- who cares about what names are allowed or not allowed. It is a game and if admins act, so be it.

I would have done it differenlty. I would have had the common courtesy to at least PM spidey about it first and sicussed it with him.

In fact, I'm thinking that I don't like bacon without eggs. I think I am going to PM him to change his name to Bacon and Eggs. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Lighten up folks.

Pook did indeed PM myself and Bacon about the fact that some people were offended by our Nic's. While I disagree that the names should be disallowed the fault does not rest with Pook or any other admin; rather with the person who got offended by such call signs in the first place.

I do agree people should lighten up though especially where it comes to humorous call signs in an internet game.

p.s. I love the fact BV locked my topic but this one is going on just fine!

Nah, not your fault Pook. While I don't quite agree w/ disabling "God," if you're getting complaints, you best disable it. I disagree with the reasons behind it, because it's basically a form of censorship due to a small group of people being offended by something that is quite harmless, but arguments with religion as the basis can get freakin' nasty, and we don't need that. Thus, disabling the screen names in question is the best course of action, if not a flawed one.

Bacon could be very offensive to muslims (and jews, potentially), Pigs are very offensive to muslims, they consider them to be vile creatures.

Seeing as how one side is going to be pissed off no matter what, why not make that side be the small minority?

Sorry pook, I dont mean to diss your unique style of retirement, I am really not annoyed with you, more the people who complained /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Technically the people who got offended would have been the majority had we not found out... but thats not a reasonable expectation on..."The Internet"

I am happy to step up and say that while I did not PM the admins, I find the callsign 'Christ' somewhat offensive. I never saw the 'Jesus' callsign in game although I joked that it wouldn't be long until someone started using it when I saw 'Christ' online. The 'God' callsign didn't bother me because it can have multiple meanings and I took it as reference to spidey's perception of his playing ability and his self-proclaimed ego; not a religious belief. I actually considered saying something about the 'Christ' callsign the moment I saw it, but I hoped that the individual using it would reconsider on his own accord.

As for other religious names being used I don't know much about other religions so I can't point out which ones would be offensive, but I would want those people to be treated with equal respect.

It's hard to be the one to stand up and say "Hey, I find that offensive" given the mindset of some in our community. You're almost guaranteed to be ridiculed, at the very least told that your personal beliefs are unimportant.

The bigger problem comes afterward, as it becomes difficult to fit in. I think it's probably a wise decision to stay out of the spotlight, in order to continue being able to play the game without suffering the backlash. If you have any doubt that the backlash would occur, or that it would be "uncomfortable", just read the posts that have emerged on this topic... they're pretty harsh.

Yeah, the Christ one was going a bit far, but the god one in my opinion was kinda amusing.

However there is a difference between people having a problem with call signs that may legitimately bother them and just being bitter people stirring the pot for their own amusement. If there is a legitimate concern I think people would respect something even if they disagree. If people are just complaining to stir the pot then there SHOULD be a backlash against them imo.

The fact that person and or persons havent stepped forward personally makes me think its the latter instead of the former. Over the last 7 years I have used many callsigns people may find "offensive" I have been quick to change them if it was a serious deal and I like to think 99% of the community would do the same. I have also had callsigns that 1 or 2 people werent big fans of but didnt destroy their playing experience every time they logged in.

I dont believe the same things as everyone in the community (me and Creeping_Death) disagree all the time but I do believe in their right to believe them. It's just sad someone had to insult my belief that my skill at Allegiance is fast approaching diety level!

In the end Pook acted with his usual brilliance but deactivating certain callsigns and I am sure it is something thats will save him and the community lots of grief later.
