Generally, there are more women than men in the world, but it's almost an even split. But Allegiance doesn't attract many women anyway, so assuming all players are male except for the few that aren't is pretty safe.

QUOTE You get kicked out of turrets because people think :
a) You might not have good aim.
b) You might not understand how important it is for bombers to go uneyed. Firing turrets drastically increases the signature of the bomber and may get it eyed, dooming the run.[/quote]
c) The pilot is going on a suicide run.
d) The pilot would prefer an interceptor escort (although presonally, as a bbr pilot, if a noob jumps on my turret when I want an int escort, I'll let him stay, because ... well ... he probably won't hit anything in an int.)
I strongly suggest you learn to read the minimap, and everytime a new enemy 'dot' appears in a sector then hover your mouse over that sector and discover what type of ship it is. Scout, fig, int etc = ignore. Con, miner, bbr = pay attention to.

Heya not much to add here, just wanted to say you've been doing a great job Sanch, good teamworker. But don't let the constant probing burn you out or bore you down though. Probes expire after 20 mins, so one person can hardly keep the entire map probed (and the threshold of sufficient probing is not 100% anyway). When you wanna do something else, like escorting cons, guarding miners, etc etc go for it. Probing is everyone's job.

I just started playing as well, and I've been having the same problem with prioritizing commands and dealing with command spam. Anymore, I treat them as "suggestions" unless it's directed at me. If it's the commander or someone in my sector, I'll accept immediately. Otherwise I'm going to do a brief check to see whats being asked of me before I give my yay, nay.
I think my worst hurdle right now is what to do after the sectors are probed in the begin game. exp: Mid game, things are quiet... Do I venture out and hunt miners, aka newbie gets podded and take a 5 minute pod break, try to anticipate an attack and lay some mines, get risky and probe enemy sectors (see aka newbie pod /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />. Alot of times I get lucky and a bomber turret opens up, which is good for me. I just fire at hostiles and forget about piloting for a while. Or a base is being attacked and I was in a base being indecisive. Suddenly I have an immediate and clear goal...launch, destroy, get podded, and get a new ship. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
So for now, it's probing, setting mines, and base defense. I also try to stay near our sectors to limit the damage from my mistakes (shorter pod rides).

Call out, who is going to hunt miners and needs a scout with them?
Grab a scout, equip it with a nanite gun and prox. Carry a load of ammo. Follow the vet and listen to him.
1. spot miners
2. nan the vet
3. drop mines in front of the miner
4. drop ammo for the vet when needed
rinse and repeat.
Sounds like drudge? Yes in a way. BUT...you will quickly learn how to hunt miners from a vet. And score huge points with the vet players.
Just one quick example of something to do.

There's ONE thing you can do to make your commander very happy after the initial scouting is done.
While the voob+ crowd is doing their own immensely important thing, You can sit on your miners. Babysit them. Cuddle them. Send private messages to them. Maybe even ask the bold guy if you could micromanage them (when you really think you should).
You will [/b ]get the chance to fight, but it will be on your home turf, a short pod ride away from home. You're bound to get help, which would have been late to save the miner You've just kept alive long enough for them to matter. Besides, you get to spam voice chat and no-one can tell you to STFU.
You have a choice of ints, figs and nans. I'd still take the nanscout because you can prox and dumbfire the enemy to death while he's trying to kill your miner. Repeat: a miner that would have died to a Giga scout had You not been there.
Don't defend a miner in an interceptor if there is no nanscouts and/or probes. You won't see anything before they're shooting at the miner.
And no, I didn't do this much as a newbie: as a consequence I was running from a fight to another, being always too late to do anything useful. On those frequent long rides home, I swore to stick to miner D "from now on".
Dev idea: maybe we should include a chat bot to the miner AI as a carrot to permanent miner D. Just pull the relevant source of the Nethack Oracle and drop it in? Yes? No?
Edit: Damn typos

1. Get in a scout.
2. Find a miner.
3. Shoot at it until one of you dies.
4. Repeat until you are a good pilot.
You think I'm joking here, but I'm not.

the dev idea was a joke right? *leaves forum to go cuddle miners*

Thanks again everyone, I'm reading all this and trying to get it to sink in. I'm sure it will eventually /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
I think I've got the hang of probing etc with the scout, I still need to work on getting down mines in good locations (ie, I'm making a note of places that some evil bugger has done me with them /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />).
Trying to get my head in gear for using the drift of the craft to my advantage. I've done space sims quite a bit in the past, but not that many actually use drift. The 3d aspect isn't too hard to get to grips with, I've got to learn to use the right weapons/ships as well.
I think I will definitely be cuddling more miners from now on /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" /> Just wanted to check, a refinery looks like a circle with a spade cut out and a miner looks like a spade (in the symbol bits for the sectors) ?
